- Introduction

In this summer i had heard about Gauguin's art exhibition at SeMA(Seoul Museum of Art) and before i went there

i tried to learn the his arts in library and I read the book "Van Gogh and Paul Gaugin"

it was very interesting they both have distinguished similarities and differences

 so i wanna compare and contrast to them in this essay.

-Similarities

1) they pursued independent artistic style.

eventhough their art became popular after their death and also their arts were not appreciated until they died.

they were appreciated the leading post-impressionist artists with their independent artistic style.

2) they both have antisocial personality.

Gauguin wanted to leave from civilized society and admired native life and people. so he spent most of his art life in Tahiti.

and he clashed with the colonial policies in there and after he was accused from France government

 he tried to suicided himself.

Gogh exhibited unstable mood and excessive action until his death

so he had to be in the hospital most of his art life.

finally he had shot himself in the chest.

3) they influenced on french post-impressionist artists.

they were a leading french post-impressionist artists like Pablo Picasso and Henri Matisse and German impressionists.

-differences

1) they have different artistic style.

while Gauguin's works is famous for his experimental use of colors and

synthetic style Gogh exhibited the inner spirit of nature in his works.

Gogh included self portraits, landscape and painting of trees and sunflowers but Gauguin used

pure colors and adapted symbolist things in his works.

2) they have the complete opposite personality.

when they lived together they often argued in the end Gogh cut off his ear himself and

 Gauguin left the house they live together.and then they didn't meet until they died.

3) they live with very different life after they broke up their friendship.

after the two months they started to live together Gauguin left Gogh's house .

Gogh's unstable moods was getting worst and he had to be in the hospital and most of

his masterpieces were completed during he was in the hospital but Gauguin moved into many countries and his completed his masterpieces in foreign countries.
