In the story "The Tell-Tale Heart" Edgar Allen Poe displays fear in it's most basic form, an instinct. The narrator of the story has a terrible fear of the old man's eye, and believes it will kill him. So he instinctively defends himself by killing the old man. The end of the story, the heart pounding in his head is the feeling of still being watched. This demonstrates fear as the world's greatest motivator. Fear will drive a person to do anything.

The Tell-Tale Heart demonstrates that fear sometimes causes people to act irrationally and do crazy things. Even after taking action to try and get rid of fear, it will still come back to you in the end, similar to how the man in the story thought that the root of his fear was the old man's eye so he killed him, but it still kept him living with the constant fear of the eye.

The story demonstrates that fear can encourage people to do irrational acts that would only cause more problems. For example, the narrator in the story was scared of the old man's "vulture eye", so he decided to kill him to make his fear go away, but this only created more problems when he could suddenly hear the old man's heart beat after he was dead.

In the story, fear plays a big factor in the caretaker causing him to make irrational decisions. Once fear gets into the mind, it consumes it more and more until the host starts to make acts that they do not necessarily want to make.
