Statement of intention:
The intention of this project is to have young generation of today’s society interested in olden day and traditional music because throughout time, our culture is starting to disappear because “traditional” music is too boring for teenagers and they’re not taking an interest in the music which made up our culture.

Our generation is very into EDM (Electronic Dance Music) so our intention is to fuse a traditional Chinese song with the style of EDM to make it more enjoyable for teenagers. We want the listener to hear the traditional melody in it and take an interest. We want them to see that traditional music can be manipulated and made into something that everyone can enjoy and it is not just “boring” music.

We want the audience to understand that traditional music is what our culture is made up of and we can’t abandon the past and what started this whole culture of music today. We want the audience to feel more connected with traditional music because it is more of what they like. Our main message is bring the two kinds of music together so teenagers can appreciate and know that there’s a lot more to traditional music than they first thought.

We wanted to get on with our work since both of us had miss a few class due to being sick.
Lesson:
Problem: As I was inserting loops to test against the new sped up original track, I realize the preset loops were sped up as well meaning that the original track is still too slow for the presets. If we change the beat of one track, it changes the speed of all the presets. We can't make the beat of the preset and the original track different because garage band wouldn't allow us. If we changed one track speed, all track speed changes.
Solution: I was stuck on this for a while but I then moved on with my work meaning I tried to find loops with steady beat to set out the beat for the whole song first. I also tried to look for loops which are slower than the rest.

Goal: To insert the music into garage band and start testing out our options and test a few remixes first to see how well the music and the different loops match. Select the part of the track we are going to use then delete the the parts we're not using.
Lesson:
Problem: When we added the music in to garage band and added a few example loops, we quickly realize that the music is too slow for a few of the preset loops on garage band. We decided to test out a few more loops and we then notice that, if we don't speed the original track up, none of the loops will work. We tried to search up on the internet on how to speed up the track but when we tried it, it didn't work.
Solution: Alice knew how to speed the track up and she came and help us sped it up. We played around with the speed of the track to test which one would be the best and most appropriate and allow it to be easier for us to remix. We then found and settled with 800bps.

Goal: To continue to remix the song and test the track with loops which we think might sound good with the original track. We wanted to get a lot done today because of the amount of missed lessons we both had.
Lesson:
Problem: The tone, tempo and rhythm of the loops wouldn't match our original soundtrack which made it impossible to remix and fuse because it will sound off. We then realize that if we use the audio track we took from youtube, it will be extremely hard to remix.
Solution: Since Kelly knows how to play the piano, we decided that Kelly will play the track by herself and we'll record it and place it into garage band. When we play the track ourselves, we are able to do it to our own pace, the pace that we want, which will be so much easier.
Additional Reflection: We found a music sheet online which Kelly and I then chose the part which we wanted to play and remix. Kelly jotted down the notes quickly and when we played it on the piano, we realized that it sounded a little bit off so Kelly decides to bring the music sheet which we jotted down home to ask her piano teacher.

Goal: To have the complete music sheet and start to record the song into garage band so we can redo the remixes and fix any flaws and mistakes we have. Also having the music recorded now means that we will not have to rush our remixing and fusing process.
Lesson:
Problem: We had to re-record the track many times because we weren't playing it to the desired speed and we also messed up a few times because we haven't practice the song for a long time.
Solution: We re-record the track 4 times until we reached our desired speed and it was the one with less mistakes. The mistakes were minor meaning she Kelly just took an extra beat rest before she played the next note when it was suppose to b continuous. That was an easy fix so we just kept the 4th recording and I moved the note in garage band to make it sound like one note is playing straight after the other.
Additional Reflection: We then added loops onto the soundtrack. We tested out many different loops from bass, drums, Chinese style to guitar. We wanted to see which loop and style best fit with our music so it can give us an idea of another loop to put into our remix.

Goal:
- Added loops
- Fade in fade out
- Fix more mistakes in the recorded track
Lesson:
Problem: After last class, we still had a lot of mistakes to fix, such as the tempo of the track and the precision of the original track and loop. Some of the loops which we added wasn't in time with our original track making it harder for us because we have to edit it very precisely in order for the loop and original track to match.
Solution: We continued what we were doing last class with precisely editing and adjusting the loops and track so the two can sound well together. We discovered how to fade in/out on garageband which allowed us to do a lot more things with the loops and track. The preset loops all end very suddenly making it sound really weird and unpleasant so we used the fade in/out to make the transition softer and more smoother.
Additional Reflection: After we finished editing the section which we were working on, we moved onto the next section and continued with adding more loops and fixing it. We chose different loops than before because the tempo and pitch were different so the same loop didn't go as well as it did before.

When we tried to look for a good steady drum beat, there wasn't any that matched with our original track.
Solution: We decided to record our own single drum beat which match the original track. We used the keyboard and chose one of the different type of drums in garageband and proceeded to record our own drum beat base on the original track so it would sound well together.
Additional Reflection: After creating the drum beat we then proceeded to work on one section at a time. We added preset loops from garageband and moved it around to see where it fit and where it will sound best with the original track. After adding the loops we fix the section which we were working on. We used the precision editor to drag the beat longer/shorter or to different spots to make it faster/slower.

Rika and Alice: (5-6)
Everything was very repetitive. When you listen carefully, you'll realize that there's only two parts to the whole music. If it was short sections which are repeated in different sequence, I think that it would sound a lot more interesting and intriguing than it does now. I don't think the music is fused, in my opinion they are just adding another more "modern" instrument to the original song which is not fusing the music. In some parts where Rika is only playing one note to match up with Alice's piano, there were a few parts where the pitch on the guitar and piano didn't match, one was very low while the other is very high. Because of that problem it sounded like Riko was playing the wrong notes. Everything else was in time with only a little slip up. They were very in time with each other, the two instruments matched throughout most of the song.

Kelly and Tracy: (3-4)
For our fused piece there was one very big problem. Our genre was EDM which is electronic music but in the background, there was a piano which was playing the original track. Not only that the piano was off beat making everything sound very confusing and not so good. Our loops matched and created a nice EDM beat but it just didn't go well with our original track. If we would've changed the instrument from a piano to something like an electric guitar, in my opinion it would've matched better with the EDM which we created. I don't think we successfully get our message across because it wasn't a successful fuse. We tried to keep the culture from the original soundtrack but we were lacking because there wasn't anything which told us or gave the audience an idea that is was a traditional Chinese song.
