One thing I want to talk about is how Buck has developed to become wild throughout the story. He starts out as a royal, family dog that only hunts for fun. Then, he starts to learn the hard way, by getting beat. Finally, he starts to adapt to the wild by watching and earning by other dogs. For example, on page 18, he learns how to bury himself in the snow to sleep. Buck, however, is adapting very easily and is learning how to be a wild dog fast.

On page 15, the book states, "Buck's first day on the Dyea beach was like a nightmare." This is an example of a simile. It's comparing Buck's first day on the beach to a nightmare. This is exaggerating how brutal and harsh all of the conditions were, especially for a dog that has never experienced much working, and not even snow. Despite of this, Buck did learn a lot on his first day and continued to learn how to survive the wild.
