The advice that I recall hearing from an Elder: To never love our child too much that we end up spoiling them, if you do you will not like the outcome of their growth, when they grow and if they have been spoiled too much, you will not like it if they do not listen to you and you cannot scold them because that is how you as a parent spoiled them rotten. But rather than scolding, be understanding and try to reason with them in their way of understanding, maybe then they will listen.

The specific elder that I often turn to is my grnadmother’s Martha and Josephine, and another respected elder Majuriaq Quvianaqtuliaq. My grandmothers for advices and Mujuriaq for traditional and cultural way of thinking and knowledge.

After speaking with them, I feel relived almost every time. For they who helped sculpt me into a better human being.

-Jean

Name giving

Name giving is still very strong and important in our culture. It is what we do to our newborns or even before they born. Also when we dream of someone who is passed on when we are pregnant it is a sign to name them after them. When the child is growing up they are exactly like the person they are named after. But in our region some children are opposite of their namesakes. For example (a child who is born and named after a person who was a very good hunter/sewer the child is grown to be opposite of the good hunter/good seamstress.

Deanna
