Pinterest & Pocket Comparison

Pinterest and Pocket are two popular applications for managing information using a well-organised and simplistic approach. For my comparison of Pocket and Pinterest, I decided to focus the content I was organising and saving on sports, as it is one of my biggest interests, I believe that I can provide an accurate judgment on how strong their ability to manage information on the topic is. After the first use of both platforms, I found the following,

Pinterest is great at displaying content for those who are visually inspired as its main concept is the idea of people sharing and discovering photos on a digital pinboard.

Pocket provides an appealing reading experience to users due to its clear, distraction-free layout and its ability to store articles for later reading.

To compare the two, I believe it comes down to how an individual prefers to process information. Both applications feature great information management but due to the fact users of pocket can not search for information without a premium paid subscription, I prefer Pinterest. On Pinterest, I could search for exactly what I was looking for and it gave me a feed of content specific to my interests after only a couple of uses.

Upon completion of my E-Portfolio A, I experienced a journey through a variety of different platforms. Through the execution of these exercises I found they had a big contribution to the constant expansion of my skill set on the internet, I began with creating and customising my own Padlet, next, I began filing this with content including crafting a Google Maps mashup of Ireland's heritage oak trees, producing a 30 second YouTube video on the use of basic text tools on Microsoft word and, critically comparing Pinterest and Pocket for information management.

Although I had not heard on the documenting tool known as Padlet until this module began, it has quickly become one of my personal favourite platforms on the web. The visually appealing board allows to showcase not only work but creativity. Its collaboration feature offered an opportunity to seamlessly interact amongst peers, creating a digital community. I believe this platform has huge potential to thrive, particularly in this transition from web 2.0 to web 3.0. Platforms like Padlet are true examples of why web 2.0 has been so successful and I imagine it will only become a stronger force in due time, “The world of Web 2.0 is also the world of what Dan Gillmor calls "we, the media", a world in which "the former audience", not a few people in a back room, decides what's important.” (O’ Reilly, T. 2007) I believe the freedom we obtain is vital online and this is why I felt Padlet was so enjoyable to use.

Following the creation of my E-Portfolio, it was time to give it life, I began this by creating a google maps mashup. As someone who has worked on maps before using ArcGIS a type of Geographic Information System (GIS), I found this to be an interesting task, I had never used google for mapping and as previously mentioned it expanded my skill set in this sector while providing an enjoyable experience. With the development and transition of maps from traditional books and paper to online catalogues and the internet has offered us both new opportunity and challenges (Johnston, R, L. & Jensen, K, L. 2009), the opportunities we are receiving with online mapping are growing and it is something I would like to be a part of.

With the mapping section done for my E-Portfolio, it was time to move onto one of the biggest social media applications in the world; YouTube. YouTube has huge opportunities for anyone with a device that has internet, it holds as much information as you will ever need from watching movies to learning how to use Microsoft word which is what I focused on. For my task I created a 30-second video displaying basic features regarding text and font using a screencast. I had a great experience creating this as I believe the creation and editing of videos is a key skill to have in this generation as we seem to be moving full steam ahead into a digital world. A study on how YouTube can impact a student’s learning was done one 150 students and the results showed that using YouTube was “A fruitful and successful learning experience mandates that students are interested in the subject and that the knowledge is presented in an intuitive way. Due to the decrease in students' interest in reading. (Chtouki, Y. Et al., 2012). As it is only a small sample it is hard to take too much away from the results, but it displays the change the world is going through as we transition from books to screens.

The final task I was set with undertaking was creating a Pinterest and Pocket account for social bookmarking. As a newcomer to these organisation tools, I thought that it might be more complex than other tasks, but that was not the case. Social bookmarking allows individuals to search and save content which they wish to personally organise (Gray, P, H. Et Al. 2011). My experience of social bookmarking using the two tools was smooth and enjoyable experience for the most part, I found Pinterest to be an application which I can see myself returning to as the content along with the bookmarking was notable. On the other hand, I had a difficult time with Pocket as I found it inconvenient that it required a paid subscription to search for specific content I would like to see, other than that, the content I was given were an enjoyable ad-free experience.

In reflection to the question of “How can I use the social media tools used to-date on this module to support my online engagement as a digital citizen, including finding, creating and publishing, curating and managing, and sharing information?” The creation of an E-Portfolio which involved creating, publishing, editing, and managing has assisted me in develop my digital identity which in all will make an easier transition into the digital world when comes a time when we may need it. According to (Vogels, E, A. Et Al. 2022) it seems that 35% of US kids aged 13-17 say they use YouTube, TikTok, Instagram, Snapchat or Facebook constantly. This scary statistic is a sign of the times with this generation’s life almost revolving around the digital world.

This privacy policy for Hootsuite provides an overview of information collection, plans for that information, and user protection. It presents a bullet point presentation layout, important for those who find it difficult to read long paragraphs. It also features important user rights including those from 5rights and more, such as the deletion of an account processes the deletion of all personal data attached to that account. By including contact information at the bottom of the privacy policy, we aim to promote transparency, user control, and trust in our platform.

In the age of a digitally driven world, we must be continuously learning and adapting to the new tools we are constantly being provided. The completion of my E-Portfolio B has provided me with this opportunity to engage and learn in a variety of sectors, including; marketing myself with LinkedIn, completing of e-tutorials on social media analytics and data visualisation, reinventing a privacy policy, creating an infographic based on ‘My DigiLife’. In this reflection, I will go into detail on how this module has supported my digital strategy and helped me control my digital presence as I am new to all of the tasks I will be undergoing.

To begin my e-portfolio part B I created a LinkedIn account. Signing up to LinkedIn has been something I have wanted to do for years but I have had no reason for it, hence seeing that it was part of this section of my e-portfolio was exciting. The opportunity to learn about this platform that I have heard so much about was important to me. According to Lianne Zhang “Your LinkedIn profile is your brand” (Liu, 2023). Establishing a reputation on LinkedIn through the presentation of abilities and knowledge can lead to the potential of employers or collaborators connecting to you. Through this exercise I gained experience completing an online profile, I also learned the importance of creating an authentic personal portfolio and engaging with others to make connections.

After learning and completing of my LinkedIn account and connections I moved on to learning through E-tutorials, achieving perfect scores on the quizzes which has assisted me in enhancing my digital literacy and research skills. Beginning with ‘Foundational Social Media Analytics for Research’ I learned and got to understand what social data is and how it can be used for research purposes. One example of the use of social data is the public healthcare consumers who are using it “for gaining knowledge on a variety of health-related topics as well as for interacting with their peers and health care providers to garner social support, mostly informational and emotional in nature” (Singh et al., 2020). While data visualisation has helped me to understand how to present research analyses to an audience.

“Representations can narrate a story and convey fundamental discoveries to your audience” (Döbler & Großmann, 2020, p.2) I believe data visualisation is an important topic as it is vital when presenting to take hold of the attention of the audience and the completion of this e-tutorial has provided me with techniques to communicate my information and findings in a clear and visually appealing manner.

The next task I was faced with for my e-portfolio was reinventing a privacy policy for a social media tool of my choice, outlining the 5 Rights outlined by (Anderson, 2017). Anderson's article on the issue of children being unable to understand privacy policies opened my mind to the power a company can have over its users with the click of a button. Users who accept these terms, particularly children are unable to understand a privacy policy and Anderson believes rewriting privacy policies is a good starting point. (Anderson, 2017). Approaching this task I wanted to create a privacy policy that would be easily understood by people of all ages, to do this I rewrote a policy for Hootsuite that focused on a bullet point format rather than the heavy paragraph style you may see in a typical privacy policy which I believe is done in an attempt to get consumers to accept without reading the terms they are accepting to. Overall, this task helped me understand in depth, what a privacy policy can include, this has prompted me to read privacy policies in full as I admit, I have been one to skip them.

My final task for this e-portfolio and my most enjoyable was creating an infographic based on ‘My DigiLife’, undergoing this task sparked a free creative side of me that I don’t get to use a huge amount. For my infographic, I decided to use Canva as I have heard about its easy-to-use UI and great potential in turning ideas into a visual presentation. The use of platforms such as Canva can be key to the “development of communication skills” which “is essential for future clinical success” (Mullins, 2023, p. 1126) Platforms like Canva can increase my skill set with presenting data, it will not only help me understand it but, it gives me the ability to dissect it down into a better visualisation for my audience.

To conclude this reflection on my E-Portfolio B, I can say without hesitation that the work put into my portfolio on Padlet has had a positive impact on my digital citizenship and skillset. The platforms used throughout this assignment have allowed me to keep my digital presence up to date and I have learned how to use some platforms which I had no history with.

The growing use of e-portfolios helps students in reflecting, analysing, and overall succession in their work (Eynon, B., & Gambino, L. M. 2017) and as it grows I hope that it is considered as a means of assessment.
