Inquiry-Based Learning: Encourage my students to be lifelong learners

Why? Learning goes far beyond the walls of a classroom or the buildings of a school. I believe that a classroom is a place where curiosity should flourish. I want my students to leave my classroom asking more questions, itching to engage more in the material, and believing in their intelligences.

How? I will strive to achieve this through modeling what it means and looks like to be a lifelong learner and incorporating student choice throughout my lessons. I believe that students with greater choice in projects, assessments, and assignments will be more invested and successful. For example, students could do a "choice board." This choice board would give students options for how they demonstrate their understanding of the material and allow them to choose a median that fits their intelligences and skills.

Why? If a student doesn't feel connected to the lesson or the teacher, they won't have any buy-in. I believe that it's important for teachers to establish a classroom where students to feel connected to their education and empowered to reach their full potential.

How? I hope to achieve this through learning students' names and investing time as well as energy to learn more about my students. Also, create engaging lessons where students feel like they can personalize the lesson to fit their individual passions. In the end, I hope that my lessons, assignments, and classroom as a whole can answer the question “what’s in it for me" for all my students.

Celebrate the learning process

Why? "Regardless of how well planned you are for the instruction, certain perceptions by students must be in place to support the successful implementation of those plans. Students must perceive the classroom environment as being supportive of their efforts" (Kellough & Kellough, Chapter 4 page 104). As teachers, we ask our students to push themselves outside of their “knowledge” comfort zone each and every day. As a result, students will make mistakes. By focusing on the process of learning as opposed to achievement, students will feel more comfortable with the learning environment and be more open to taking risks.

How? I will incorporate the notion of celebrating the learning process in my classroom by encouraging students to try their best, and celebrate learning through fun forms of celebration such as applause, whooses, toasts, finger snaps, and affirmation statements.

Below is a video from when I was a film teacher at Cornell's Summer Film Academy for middle school students in the area. The goal of the academy was to teach students how to write, produce, and edit an original film. In the end we created a wonderful film, but that wasn't without many mistakes, bloopers, and celebrations along the way.

Why? "A conducive classroom learning environment is one that is emotionally safe, that helps students to perceive the importance of what is being taught, that helps them realize they can achieve, and that is instructive in the procedures for doing it," (Kellough & Kellough, Chapter 4 page 103).

How? I hope to establish a safe and inclusive classroom environment where all students can be successful. For the foundation of my classroom environment I will build rapport and connections with each of my students. By doing this, students will feel like they belong in the classroom and that their teacher cares about their success. Another way I hope to build a safe and inclusive classroom environment is through working with my students to establish the classroom expectations. I believe that if students have a stake in defining the classroom expectations, rules and procedures, they will have greater success at respecting them. It is my hope that the classroom environment we create as a class allows all my students feel like they have the opportunities to succeed.
