Since I have not had much experience using machines in the workshop I concluded that I need to get more familiar with them in the timeframe needed Basic tasks like turning and threading can take longer to learn. Also, designing the built in collar is very difficult involving using CAD making the design and then put it into a real-world scenario will probably at least take 6 hours. In a likely scenario I will spend alot of time measuring, setting up and troubleshooting the product when in the process of construction.

I have made a new advancement finding out that certain rubbers which construct the grip mechanism may cause dermatitis. This is a setback which needs to be addressed as dermatitis can be dangerous and even life threatening in certain conditions. I have concluded on doing more research on this matter for finding the best brand and type of rubber to use. This consists of non-corrosive, non-slippy and strong material.

Non virgin rubber - costs friendly and although it can not be pure but, most normal everyday users use this product.

TPE and Silicone are typically made for dumbbells but, in this case they are not suited because of they cannot be made with 3d printing machines posing a problem. However, the solution for this which is just as good is TPU as it is just as strong and can be made through 3D printing machines.

Cast iron is a very good consideration in this case but, its important to consider how it is less strong than high quality metals such as stainless steel. Although stainless steel is massively more expensive it is something which should be considered if the product is wanted to be professional and long lasting.

Certain metals cause friction, cannot carry heavy weights and are not sturdy. This poses a problem as fitting the weights on the dumbbell is crucial. SWOT ANALYSIS

Potential weaknesses of the dumbbell, in this case dumbbells require a moderate amount of experience posing potential lack of skill. Firstly, shaping, cutting and detailing the steel for the dumbbell could pose difficulty when considering that the creator has not had experience with the tools needed in the component process. Secondly, organising, shaping and adding TPU plastic grips which actually fit the steel could be time intensive and pose risk of not completing the project purely from lack of experience.

The £100 limitations of the budget will be exceeded in this component as the steel material alone almost fills the whole budget.

The weight of the materials may pose problems with handling and moving the raw components in the workshop. The risk of injury is prominent in this case as raw materials can be sharp and corrosive when not properly smoothed or cut.

The benefits of the component include the offer of a TPU changeable grip which is beginner friendly also allowing for a comfortable grip. This design is much better than other grip strength-based grip implementation solely because of how it is comfortable allowing for reduction of injury. Therefore, stopping potential injuries like arthritis when using them in intense use.

The design is all-encompassed because it allows beginners to understand which grip is best for them regarding their strength and allowing for a tool where they can improve quicker with strength.

The market potential could be comfort and changeability because most grips in the market do not focus on comfort. Therefore, allowing for a grip which can fill a gap which customers in the market want.

Also, another way to reduce the cost of the product is recycle the leftover scraps which the machines and the TPU waste.

The potential threats include the availability of the machines needed to make the product especially with using metals as tools as such because they are more popular especially with tasks like using the 3D printer to create the grips.

In a case where the grips are the wrong size it would pose time-constraint risks and hinder the overall process of making the component. The whole design relies heavily on the TPU grips as the market already has multiple designs with comfortable grips and well-working dumbbells. This makes a potential threat as without the different size grips the project will be insufficient because of its lack of individuality.

Given my lack of experience in the workshop operating the machines may strike up a problem facing a learning curve as understanding the use of TPU and Steel should not be underestimated.

After researching I have found a new problem I need to take in consideration which is the grip wearing down from overuse. This problem occurs from the rubber material slipping from the contrast of hard metal compared to malleable plastic causing deterioration. Therefore, there are three possible solutions to stop TPU from slipping.

A solution for this is to implement a grippy pattern inside the TPU grip for to stop slipping. However, this solution is difficult as it involves using CAD where invert pattern creating is not meant to be done. This poses a problem as this cannot be done with consistency making it unreliable.

The final product is wrapping Silicone Grip Tape to help add a grippy texture. This solution works due to the co-friendly nature with plastics like TPU producing a tight and long lasting grip without the grip slipping. I have estimated the weight of the bar which holds the weights of the dumbbell through the calculation. "Weight = Width × Length × Thickness × 0.2836". This allowed me to calculate the weight being (5.51+5.51+4.72)x(1.38)x(1.10)x(0.2836) which calculates as 6.5824. This weight is above the average 5 kg which is excellent for a dumbbell

The piece I found is able to withstand strong forces and is perfect as a dumbbell as it can withstand long duration use. This is proven through its use in public gyms in which it withstands drops from high heights onto the floor when people drop them after there workout. Secondly, Stainless Steel does not rust over time and doesn't change in shape after the initial form unlike other metals. Thirdly, Stainless Steel is not too heavy a metal which allows more diversity in different weight sizes making it easier to gain strength when working out. Fourthly, Stainless steel can be formed into different shapes because it is malleable.

Reason: After doing research on the most optimal dumbbell length it has been proven that the previous 18 inches or 460mm is too large and is for power lifting not for basic exercises like curls, lateral raises and triceps extensions proving inadequate. The tested grip was a success and there was minimal flailing of the grip and no printing errors in the test grip. Therefore, because of how occupied the 3d printer is with other users and the minimal time left to execute the project. I decided to use the grip made as it proved to meet my requirements of strength, flexibility and aesthetics.

I decided to test the ninja flex tpu which I purchased for the project as it was approved by martin, and the process of it being made by the 3d printer was beginning.

The ninja flex orange TPU proved a success so I used it for both smaller grips consisting of 2 consecutive 7 hour sessions. This was because of ninja flexes innate ability for flexibility and strength. Although I kept the large grip which was made from Martin's TPU as it made the different sizes more distinguishable due to its different blue colour compared to the other orange ninja flex colour of the smaller grips.

I took pictures of the grips successfully conveying all the needed angles for a proper view of the different sizes and gave my Lecturer Huw Raine an assignment of the progress I have completed up to this date. His feedback was that I was doing adequately. Although, he said that I needed to start cutting the steel.

I ran into a problem faced from the transportation of the steel as it is large and heavy occupying a large amount of space. After studying how I could transport this safely and effectively, I concluded that I could hold onto it while transporting it through the bus. Also, no problem was faced with the Ninja Flex TPU because of its small compact size I was able to transport it through my backpack.

I transported the steel through the bus system and gave my lecturer Huw Raine, the plans I have to cut the steel and asked for who can help as I have minimal experience with the workshop tools posing a problem of skill. Therefore, requiring help to proceed in the processes needed to cut the steel bar.

I organised a time to meet with Zac the workshop engineer to discuss when he is free to help be cut the steel through verbal communication. The time we concluded was 3:30 to 4:30 in the evening on a Wednesday giving me enough time to work on the documentation on my project among other assignments before the due date of 07/05/2025 when I could cut the steel.

I took pictures of the steel in different angles showing its length and thickness. This had to be done before it was cut as it shows the difference of before and after allowing a better understanding of the change of aesthetics providing evidence of improvement.

finding out when martin is available to help me create the 3D grips

I gave my grip cad drawings to Martin so he could Create 3D grips, based from a session of 7 hours making the largest grip size as a test run.

I decided to test the ninja flex tpu which I purchased for the project as it was approved by martin, and the process of it being made by the 3d printer was beginning.

I bought the steel and ninja flex TPU today.
