Reflection of Belonging in Adult Learning Essay

Belonging is an important element of adult learning because it directly impacts learners’ motivation, persistence, and engagement. Maslow’s hierarchy of needs identifies belonging as a fundamental human need before higher-level learning and growth can occur (Maslow, 1987). In transformative learning theory, inclusion and the ability to share and validate assumptions and lived experiences are essential to effective adult learning (Cranton, 2016). In addition, (Brookfield, 2017) makes a strong argument that “challenge and critique can be less daunting, and it becomes safer to expose your ignorance or uncertainty if you are part of a community in which everyone is expected to do so” (p. 186). In other words, when adults feel accepted and respected, they are more willing to take risks and open themselves up to new ways of thinking.

Activities chosen for the course included icebreaker games to promote collaboration, small-group discussions to explore diverse perspectives, case study activity to help with student success, and Kahoot to support one another’s learning. These activities help build inclusion by allowing students to get to know and learn from each other, validating their backgrounds, and emphasizing shared problem-solving to build trust and create a supportive classroom culture. Inclusion was also woven into course design by clearly communicating opportunities to work together and treating each other with respect, which are essential elements of any learning community where adult learners can feel a sense of belonging and, as a result, more likely to persist and engage in their personal and professional goals (Merriam & Bierema, 2014).
