Humans modify land in different ways. Sometimes, we just adjust to the natural land by deciding which crop is best grown in our climate. But, there is also the idea of possibilism that "physical environment may limit human actions, but people have the ability to adjust to their environment." Technology has played a huge roll in modifying places like the Netherlands and New Orleans. People in flood-prone areas like the Netherlands make things like polders and dikes. Polders are pieces of land created by draining water, and dikes are like walls built to prevent flooding. In New Orleans, Louisiana, there are many systems made to attempt to stop flooding that can happen from hurricanes, but they don't always work. People depend on land a lot for agriculture to grow crops for food or clothing. We also need land that can be used as a steady base for our homes.

Strong use of evidence from the reading. Can you define what it means to "modify" the land? Can you explain the difference between "modifying" and "adapting"? - Mr. D

Humans modify land in different ways. Modifying is changing the look of something. One example of modifying is building a dam. You can prevent flooding by using a dam as a wall. This is modifying because you are changing the look and route of the natural water. Adapting is using natural resources to create a new way of doing things. For example, solar panels are adapting because you are using a natural resource, the sun, for energy with the panels. If your house does not get electricity, solar panels are an adaptation for energy.

I can define sustainability and explain its relationship to population.

Sustainability is human use of limited resources on Earth in ways that will ensure that these resources are available for generations in the future. Limited resources are those that take a long time to keep up with how fast we use them. One example is coal. Coal is used for heat and electricity. But, if we use our coal resource up too fast, it would be a very long time until we could make up the amount we used. Two ways to manage resources are preservation and conservation. Preservation is maintaining resources in good condition with limited human interference. On the other hand, conservation is the simple idea that humans should just leave nature how it is and that it is not right to demolish all types of nature for human convenience. This includes plants and animals. Sustainability relates directly to population. If we are constantly taking down forests and plants to build homes, or killing species to use as food, we are decreasing the populations of different plants and animals to endangerment. Not managing these resources would mean these species can become extinct, so they won't be around for the future generations. For example, whaling, the hunting of whales, could likely decrease the whale population for the future. Whales are often hunted for their oils, which is a limited resource. But if we endanger the whales, they can no longer be a resource for the future. Another example, logging, could wipe out a big chunk of tree populations, which we use for wood products.

Birth rates and death rates constantly change. There are 5 stages of population, but most countries fall under stages 1-4. If there is a high birth rate but low death rate, that would be a population increase. If there is a low birth rate and high death rate, the population would decrease. If the rates for birth and death are the same, there is no change in population because a person who dies just replaces a person who is born. Stage 1 starts with a high birth date and death rate, and goes to stage 5 where the birth rate is lower than the death rate, so the population will die off.

Great understanding of the relationship between birth and death rates. -- Mr. D

Population changes because of many things. One example is immigration. This changes the regional population because there is an influx of people moving into your country. This would be a population increase. Another example that changes the number of people world wide would be natural disasters. Earthquakes, tsunamis, droughts, etc are responsible for large numbers of deaths worldwide. There are so many deaths from natural disasters that the birth rate couldn't replace all them, so there would be a population decline.

Good use of examples in explaining what factors change population (both in a region and the total world population). -- Mr. D

Society changes for many reasons, good and bad. One example of good change could be equality gained. This change would create a good society, so more people would want to live there. Society changes over time because the living area changes. Climate is something that can change that would change society. They would have to adapt to make certain crops, or they might have to move away. Other changes like new religions, civil disagreement, inequality, and advances in technology change the quality of life, standard of living, culture and population of a society. The government is also a big factor in society change, because the government controls/influences the laws and rights of the people.
