An Appointed Person is someone selected to:

• Take charge during a first aid emergency

• Call the emergency services when needed

• Look after the first aid box and other equipment

• Record accidents or incidents appropriately

They are not expected to give first aid, unless they are trained to do so.

The contents on the next slide may vary depending on the risks in the workplace.

Both qualified First Aiders and appointed persons check and restock the boxes regularly.

1. Stay calm and keep yourself safe

2. Call 999 or 111 – give the location and nature of the emergency

3. Do not attempt treatment unless trained

4. Reassure the casualty and make them comfortable

5. Wait with them until help arrives

6. Record the incident in your organisation’s accident book

While Appointed Persons don’t give treatment, it’s useful to understand the three Ps:

• Preserve life

• Your first priority is to keep the casualty alive and safe.

  • Check for dangers before approaching

  • Call for emergency help if needed

  • Start life-saving treatment only if you are trained

• Protect the casualty from further harm, call for help early and stay with the casualty

• Do what you can to stop the situation from getting worse.

  • Stay calm and reassure the casualty

  • Avoid moving them unless necessary

  • Control bleeding, protect wounds, and keep them warm

• Promote recovery

• Help the person recover where possible.

  • Stay with them until help arrives

  • Make them comfortable

  • Provide information to paramedics or first aiders.

    
    

Always remember to protect yourself and others. Use gloves and follow hygiene practices and avoid contact with blood and bodily fluids.

Appointed Persons are responsible for ensuring incidents are recorded and reported.

You must:

• Pass information to the Health & Safety Lead

• Log the incident on Sentinel. Instructions can be found on the following slide.

• Report serious incidents under RIDDOR

• Keep records factual, accurate and confidential

Check your kit regularly. Many items, particularly sterile ones, are marked with expiry dates. Replace expired items, disposing of them safely. If a sterile item doesn't have an expiry date, check with the manufacturer to find out how long it can be kept. For non-sterile items without dates, you should check that they are still fit for purpose.
