VALENZUELA - Max's Restaurant is one of the most iconic and beloved restaurant chains in the Philippines, famous for its tagline "The House That Fried Chicken Built." The story of Max’s began in 1945, when it was founded by Maximo Gimenez, a Filipino-American who had a passion for cooking. After returning to the Philippines from the United States, Maximo, or "Max," opened a small café in Quezon City. He initially served roasted chicken to a small group of friends and neighbors. Little did he know, that simple act would grow into one of the most recognized restaurant brands in the country. Max’s fried chicken quickly became popular for its crispy, golden-brown skin and tender, flavorful meat. The secret to its success lay in Maximo's special recipe and his dedication to quality. Over time, word spread about how delicious the fried chicken was, and people began to flock to the restaurant to try it. Max’s became a place where friends and families could gather to enjoy good food in a relaxed, welcoming atmosphere. As the restaurant gained more popularity, it expanded its menu to include more Filipino dishes, staying true to the local flavors and culinary traditions. Dishes like lumpia, kare-kare, pancit, and other comfort food staples became part of the Max’s dining experience. These additions turned Max’s Restaurant into a full-service family restaurant, offering a wide variety of beloved Filipino dishes that paired perfectly with its famous fried chicken. Max’s Restaurant grew steadily over the years, thanks to its focus on great food and a warm, family-friendly atmosphere. Its fried chicken became the centerpiece of family celebrations, birthdays, and other special occasions. The restaurant became known not just for its food, but for the sense of community and togetherness it provided. The phrase "The House That Fried Chicken Built" was a reflection of how important that signature dish was in making the restaurant a beloved institution in Filipino culture. By the 1990s, Max’s Restaurant had expanded its reach, with more branches opening up across the Philippines. It also ventured into international markets, setting up restaurants in places with large Filipino communities, such as the United States, Canada, and the Middle East. Today, Max’s has over 150 branches both in the Philippines and around the world, continuing to serve its iconic fried chicken and Filipino comfort food. Despite its expansion and growth, Max’s has remained true to its roots, focusing on serving high-quality, delicious meals that bring people together. The restaurant has continued to innovate over the years by introducing new menu items while still holding on to the traditional Filipino dishes that made it famous. Max’s Restaurant is more than just a place to eat, it is a beloved part of Filipino culture, a place where families and friends gather to share memorable moments over a hearty meal. The restaurant’s legacy of delicious fried chicken and comforting Filipino food continues to make it a favorite dining destination for generations of Filipinos, whether at home or abroad.

Par - Tropical Hut: Atin to

Did you know that before all the famous fast-food restaurants here in the Philippines, we already had our own? Tropical Hut, a proudly Filipino fast-food chain, has been serving generations of Pinoys since 1962. It all started as a humble sari-sari store, which later expanded into a grocery with a small coffee shop, eventually becoming Tropical Hut Food Market, Inc. by 1965. When it was acquired by Mercury Drug in 1972, the brand began its rise, opening branches across Metro Manila. It became known for its classic burgers like the Rancho Ranchero and Hawaiian Glee, hearty rice meals, spaghetti, clubhouse sandwiches, and the all-time favorite Filipino dessert... halo-halo! At its peak during the 70s and 80s, Tropical Hut was a go-to place for family outings and casual merienda sessions. However, when foreign giants like McDonald's and homegrown rival Jollibee entered the scene, Tropical Hut struggled to keep up due to minimal marketing and fewer new branches. For years, it quietly faded into the background, not until a viral tweet in June 2022 revived the nation's love for it. A single post by a customer who was dining alone in the Escolta branch sparked a social media frenzy. This wave of nostalgia brought long lines, soldout menus, and public interest, causing the opening of a new branch in Bonifacio Global City (BGC) in April 2023. As of today, Tropical Hut has over 20 branches, most of them in Metro Manila, each carrying its iconic logo of a palm tree and hut, symbols of its tropical, homegrown identity. For me, it is more than just food, Tropical Hut represents Filipino pride and memory, proving that even in a fast paced world, there's always room for something that we can proudly say "atin".

The Evolution of KFC (Kentucky Fried Chicken) here in the Philippines:

KFC first came to the Philippines in 1966, opening its first branch along Leon Guinto Street in Manila. Founded by Colonel Harland Sanders in the United States, KFC became one of the first American fast-food chains to reach Filipino shores. In the 1970s and 1980s, the brand faced slow growth and strong competition, partly because it had not yet fully adapted to local tastes. Things changed in 1994 when the Ramcar Group of Companies took over the local franchise. This marked a major relaunch, with updated stores, better service, and a localized menu. KFC began offering meals that suited Filipino preferences, such as Filipino-style spaghetti, chicken with rice, mushroom soup, fully loaded meals, and rice bowls like the KFC Sisig and Famous Bowl. The brand also became famous for its iconic unlimited gravy. Today, KFC has over 300 branches nationwide, serving its world-famous 11 herbs and spices fried chicken along with menu items made especially for Filipinos. KFC continues to grow by combining its international identity with flavors that Filipinos love.

The History of McDonald’s: From Humble Beginnings to Global Icon

McDonald’s is one of the most recognized fast food brands in the world today, but its journey began with humble beginnings. The story of McDonald’s is not just about hamburgers and fries—it’s about innovation, vision, and the rise of a global business empire that transformed the way the world eats.

The roots of McDonald’s trace back to 1940, when brothers Richard and Maurice McDonald opened a small drive-in restaurant in San Bernardino, California. Originally called “McDonald’s Bar-B-Q,” the restaurant offered a wide variety of items and employed carhops to serve food to customers in their vehicles. However, in 1948, the brothers decided to revamp their business model. They simplified their menu to just a few items: burgers, fries, and drinks. They also introduced the “Speedee Service System,” a revolutionary method that emphasized speed, efficiency, and consistency—an early version of what we now know as fast food.

The real turning point for McDonald’s came in 1954, when Ray Kroc, a milkshake machine salesman, visited the brothers’ restaurant. Impressed by their operation, he saw the potential for nationwide—and even global—expansion. In 1955, Kroc opened the first official McDonald’s franchise in Des Plaines, Illinois, and established the McDonald’s Corporation. By 1961, he bought exclusive rights to the McDonald’s name and operating system for $2.7 million, paving the way for rapid growth and innovation.

Under Kroc’s leadership, McDonald’s became more than just a restaurant; it became a symbol of American culture and a model of business success. The company introduced famous menu items such as the Big Mac, Egg McMuffin, and Happy Meal. It also became known for its golden arches, friendly service, and focus on family-friendly dining. In 1967, McDonald’s opened its first international locations in Canada and Puerto Rico, marking the beginning of its global expansion.

Today, McDonald’s operates in over 100 countries and serves more than 69 million customers each day. The brand has adapted to changing consumer tastes by offering healthier options, incorporating technology like digital ordering kiosks, and localizing menus to fit regional preferences.

When the food items became more popular than ice cream, the family decided to convert the ice cream parlor into a fast food restaurant, which became the first Jollibee outlet in 1978.
