Have your ideas about teaching young learners changed in any way? If so how?

I study with young learners and I realize they are different from adults. Today we talked about young learners characteristics .To organize an activity is important. I realized some my mistakes about organizing. Teacher should create effective lesson plan. Process of listening should organize correctly such as pre, post and during. In this way there is meaningful learning. In conclusion students can learn effectively.

What needs to be adapted most in your course books to help children improve their oral skills?

Dialog activities is effective for students but we should modify them interesting and meaningful ways.
Such as,we can add social chunks and clear context. Students don't have meaningful reason for talking. Speaking activities in the coursebooks are so long. It is complex for them.

How can PDC's help you with that issue?
Before PDC's programme I used speaking activities in my lesson.I think they are appropriate for my students. However, I realized that I should adapt these activities in child-friendly ways. Some of them are using natural language, using social chunks, use real objects and actions to make the dialogue more real.

Do you think shared reading is a suitable procedure to use with L2 children? Why? Why not?

I think it is depends on the students. Children do not acquire reading skills by themselves. They need instruction. To make reading an enjoyable experience,to model appropriate fluent reading behaviour for children,to focus on understanding first,to develop L2 reading skills through the shared context of the story ,shared reading is suitable for them. On the contrary, some student want to read silent. They don't want to read aloud. In conclusion ,teacher should select the best way for student's needs and willingness.

'Maintaining a balance between children's enjoyment and acceptable behaviour is often one of the greatest challenges that primary language teachers face'
1-Do you agree or not?
2- What challenges do teachers face? And how do they manage it?

I agree. Young learners have different characteristics. Sometimes they want to learn and sometimes they want to play game in the lesson. Because they are kids.In this case, classroom management is important issue. It is about the learning environment.Teacher should organize her lesson with classroom management .She should have classroom routines. She gives them to responsibilities and setting up rules with students. In additon to, teacher should contribute to children's self esteem and confidence. Teacher allow the children to carry out the activity independently and responsibly, and make it clear. To sum up, while teaching children, we should take consider their characteristics and organize our classroom management techniques.

Has your view of assesment changed? How?

Actually,I use types of assesment in my classroom, such as self-assesment,informal assesment and formal assesment. However,I realized that sometimes I don't use them effectively. After this lesson I learned how I managed them. I should give feedback in a child-friendly way. I should apply these questions in my lessons. 'What grade level is ?, What is the main purpose if test? What language and skills is it listening ?, How child friendly us it?' Furthermore, peer assesment is important but I could'nt use it. After our assesment lesson , I remember it and I will use in my lessons.

of being in a Professional Development
Community for the teachers of English in your
local context who join your PDC meetings
2. How do you feel the PDC sessions you have
studied in this face to face training programme
will help you deal with possible problems when
you are planning and conducting PDCs for
teachers in your local context?
