The actor Andrew Lincoln is perfect for putting a face to the character of John Proctor. Andrew Lincoln plays as one of the main protagonists in the TV show The Walking Dead and the persona connected to Andrew's portrayal fits into the role of John Proctor in The Crucible.

Within The Crucible, John Proctor is the main character, or at least one of them, and his arc /story line carries in full circle to the very end of the play. Proctor is a Puritan in Salem with deeply rooted religious beliefs, who is generally a good and honest man, and has a wholesome reputation John feels he must live by. Although, he is married to Elizabeth Proctor, he had an affair with Abigail Williams which haunts him and marks him as a sinner. He visibly regrets what he did in the quote, "Abby, I may think of you softly from time to time. But I will cut off my hand before I'll ever reach for you again," (Miller, pg. 177) and this rejection of Abigail spirals a series of events that lead to the witch hunts. John Proctor is driven to redeem his sins and goes before Reverend Hale to cleanse himself in the name of God, saying, "Thou shalt not covet thy neighbor's goods, nor make unto thee any graven image," (Miller, pg. 199) and he repeats the last part of the phrase again, later admitting to adultery. At the end of the story, Proctor is taken prisoner in a belief to be a wizard and he stands by being honest and refusing to confess to something he did not do, wholly believing in being truthful before God and states, "I cannot mount the gibbet like a saint. It is a fraud. I am not that man," (Miller, pg. 236). John Proctor ends up being killed after lying to spare his life by refusing documentation and finding the courage to die for the truth. He was driven by righteousness, ego, and honesty.
