I Believe the character most impacted by this issue was Junior. Junior losses his grandma and his sister from alcoholism, he also experiences poverty and sadness from this issue. I believe issue does change Junior, after the death of his grandma and his sister he promises his mother that he won't drink a drop of alcohol. Junior teaches us that alcoholism can destroy and take away lives, He shows that alcoholism destroys lives, alcoholics become depressed and often live in poverty, People can killed drunk drivers. I believe Junior was necessary for addressing this issue because it show you can be affected by other peoples alcohol addiction.

Of the 3.9 million Americans who received treatment for a substance abuse problem in 2005, 2.5 million of them were treated for alcohol use.(Drug Free World). 100,000 people die each year from alcohol-related causes: drinking and driving crashes, other accidents, falls, fires, alcohol-related homicides and suicides. (NCAAD). The life expectancy for the average Russian man is now about 60 years, Alcohol poisoning alone kills 40,000 Russians a year (compared with about 300 in the United States). Alcoholism is a very important issue because if we don't do something about it, it creates an environment where our friend's and family's well being is at risk. If you or somebody are addicted to alcohol tell somebody talk about, get help, don't keep quiet.

Real World Issue

My real world issue is alcoholism. This issue affects many characters in the book and many characters are alcoholics, events that are caused by alcohol and alcoholism are going to eventually push the main character to not drink alcohol. There is one major event that impacts the plot, the death of junior's grandma, in the book junior states that (''I mean, it's natural to bury your grandmother. Grandparents are supposed to die first, but they're supposed to die of old age. They're supposed to die of a heart attack or a stroke or of cancer or of Alzheimer's. They are not supposed to get run over and killed by drunk driver'').(Pg 158). Junior is angry that is grandma got killed by drunk driver, he also said that his grandma never drank alcohol, he says that only five people on the reservation never had alcohol before. The book's setting is an Indian reservation which junior describes as poor and depressing. I believe the issue is caused by the setting because most people are in poverty and they think they get out of poverty and that there are no opportunities for them and that makes them depressed and they turn to drinking. I think the issue does impact the theme of the freedom and hope because, junior thought there's no way out of the reservation, and that he would be just like every other Indian in the reservation, poor drunk and sad. It showed that he could leave the reservation and change his destiny. The book is written from Junior's perspective and it does impact our opinion on the issue, in the book, Junior express that alcohol can destroy and take away lives, he also expressed that people who are alcoholics are miserable, in poverty and have no hope.
