As a musician, and someone who composes music, it is important to be aware of all the music that has come before us and how that can inspire us to also write great music. In this assignment, I will look into how music has developed over time. I will focus on 3 key artists, from 3 different key periods in musical history and use these 3 different artists to compare how their circumstances influenced them musically. The 3 artists that I will discuss will all be from the 'popular age' (1900- present).

LO3- Something that I feel is important to look into, are the cultural contexts that musicians work within. The cultural demands placed on the musicians that I will look at, are very different for each artist because of the different decades and time periods that they came from. For example, Prince had the cultural demands of having to deal with illegal downloading and trying to make money off music in a world where it is very easy to steal music. Because music is so easy to get for free, the cultural demands that Prince would have had to face would be things like feeling pressured to sell his music for cheaper in order to not lose fans/ sales. This is relatable to me, as a musician because we face the same issues today. Another cultural demand that is placed on musicians is they feel they have to make their songs radio- friendly. It would be an important thing for musicians to have their songs played on the radio because it would bring a lot of publicity, however it can feel like you're going against your musical freedom if you feel like you have to dilute your songs in order for people to listen to them.
Social environment and political legislation can also influence the production of music. Social environment can have an effect because people may feel that they live far away from venues and from the scene that they are interested in. This can have a negative effect on musicians because they could feel as though they have to try harder to make their gigs accessible to fans. This can add extra pressure and take away from the music. Another part about social environment is the fact that different people associate themselves with different genres and therefore different scenes. Social class can also have an impact on what genre of music people think they 'fit into'. Something that I have found, through being a musician and being a fan of different genres of music, is that the people that you are friends with can have a big impact on the music that you listen to. Social class can have an impact because you can usually find that people from an upper class background, mostly listen to the likes of classical, opera and jazz music as opposed to metal, hip-hop or rock music. This would influence which artists play in which areas and would even dictate what venues will open in which areas and if they will be successful.
Next I will look at how political legislation can influence the production of music. As much as legislation can affect music, I think that music also has an equal amount of power to change people's political views. When events are banned by the government, such as illegal underground raves, this can actually boost the demand. Such events can become more appealing when they are banned. Studies have actually shown that legislation in this case has the opposite effect of what the government were trying to accomplish. The same thing applies to songs that are banned because of either their political views or use of inappropriate language/ explicit content.
