People could sleep in their own homes with extra safety. They were nicknamed 'table shelters' because they were designed to sleep under at night in case the house was damaged by bombs, and the rest of the time, they could be used as a table! They came as kits with a metal top and wire sides (with a little door), to be assembled at home and they were 2 metres in length, 1.2 metres in width and 75 cm tall. By 1945 a million were in use. They could help save people if their house was damaged but wouldn't save them from a direct bomb blast.

They were named after the person in the government who was in charge of home security. He was called Herbert Morrison.

Morrison Shelter Facts - Primary Facts
