In September of 1869, Maria Morgan was the first female reporter to occupy a desk at the Times newsroom. She was assigned to stock news, horseshoes, and racing. On the other hand Sara Jane Clark was the first woman reporter on the Times payroll. She used the pen name, Grace Greenwood, to submit pieces from the West and Europe.
