- The first people to live in Paraguay were the Guarani, and they were farmers. The Spanish arrived in Paraguay in the 1530s and lived among the natives. The Spanish took over and ruled until Paraguay gained independence from Spain in 1811. One of the major wars it participated in was the War of the Triple Alliance, which was fought from 1864 to 1870, where it lost two thirds of the male population and lots of land against the Triple Alliance of Uruguay, Brazil, and Argentina. Many people say it was the bloodiest war ever fought in South America. During the war, Paraguay had a young, spoiled dictator that led them to trouble. As a result, two political parties were born - the Liberal Party and the National Republican Association. The Liberal Party was strongest and rose to power, starting a democratic republic that lasted through many more wars up until today.

Paraguay is a democratic republic. Paraguayans elect Presidents, Vice Presidents, a Congress, and other leaders similar to U.S. citizens. Like the U.S. is divided into states, Paraguay is divided into 17 departments and one capital city, Asuncion, and each has a local government. The country has had many constitutions, but the most recent one was made in 1992. This constitution states that Paraguay is a democratic republic and that it is run by a legislative body, made up of the Chamber of Deputies and the Senate, an executive body, made up of the President, Mario Abdo Benitez, the Vice President, Hugo Adalberto Velazquez Moreno, and the cabinet, and a judicial body, made up of the Supreme Court.
