Gorman said she wrote the poem to "celebrate the new year and honor the hurt and the humanity of the last one."

May this be the day
We come together.
Mourning, we come to mend,
Withered, we come to weather,
Torn, we come to tend,
Battered, we come to better.
Tethered by this year of yearning,
We are learning
That though we weren't ready for this,
We have been readied by it.
We steadily vow that no matter
How we are weighed down,
We must always pave a way forward.
*
This hope is our door, our portal.
Even if we never get back to normal,
Someday we can venture beyond it,
To leave the known and take the first steps.
So let us not return to what was normal,
But reach toward what is next.
*
What was cursed, we will cure.
What was plagued, we will prove pure.
Where we tend to argue, we will try to agree,
Those fortunes we forswore, now the future we foresee,
Where we weren't aware, we're now awake;
Those moments we missed
Are now these moments we make,
The moments we meet,
And our hearts, once altogether beaten,
Now all together beat.
*
Come, look up with kindness yet,
For even solace can be sourced from sorrow.
We remember, not just for the sake of yesterday,
But to take on tomorrow.
*
We heed this old spirit,
In a new day's lyric,
In our hearts, we hear it:
For auld lang syne, my dear,
For auld lang syne.
Be bold, sang Time this year,
Be bold, sang Time,
For when you honor yesterday,
Tomorrow ye will find.
Know what we've fought
Need not be forgot nor for none.
It defines us, binds us as one,
Come over, join this day just begun.
For wherever we come together,
We will forever overcome.

My favorite part of this poem was when she said "torn, we come to tend, battered, we come to better." I feel like that is very relatable because after I slipped out my car this morning, I was feeling torn and battered. Then, someone else slipped and so I felt like we came to tend one another and therefore came to better. Yeah my ego is a little bruised but you know what? Happens to the best of us.

Personally, I am a fan of Amanda Gorman because I think she writes in a way that individuals can directly relate to the words and the themes of her poems. I think the line that resonated with me the most was "That though we weren't ready for this, We have been readied by it." My family in particular has been greatly affected by COVID-19, as I am sure other families have also been affected, and I have seen the changes we have had to make, the grief and struggles we've endured, and the perseverence we have beared through it and we never saw it coming, but it has caused us all to mature and grow remarkably by it.

I thought that this poem was well spoken by Amanda Gorman. It is a good message to keep moving forward, especially after going through a difficult time in your life. I like how this poem is incredibly applicable to real life. For the past few years, we have been struggling with the pandemic, and so for the new year this poem is a good message to come together, be kind, and continue to do better for 2022.

I really appreciated her verse about the impossibility of a return to normalcy. While we may never erase the scars of the pandemic, we can certainly grow from what we've learned, and choose which aspects of our covid-era adaptations we'd like to keep and which we'd like to abandon. Hope will keep us moving forward during a time where the end doesn't seem to be in sight.

I like this poem, it's a nice way to ring in the new year. Still a little let down that she wasn't actually doing sign language, rather just doing hand motions. Amanda do be absolutely sick at poems, and she is on the rise to being the GOAT. I do think she really emphasizes the need to come together as a group and work to be the best at what will come our way.

So personally, I love the way Amanda Gorman writes and presents her poems. I fully believe that poetry is both a written and spoken art that has limitless possibilities. As for this poem in particular, I feel that it resonates with most everyone, given that this past year just sucked. My favorite line was, "And our hearts, once altogether beaten/ Now all together beat."

I really enjoyed this new poem by Amanda Gorman about the future of 2022 and the past of 2021. I liked how antonyms were juxtaposed, describing the hardships of 2021 while also highlighting the how we've grown as a country. Overall, I enjoyed the optimistic nature of the poem. I believe that Amanda Gorman has a very unique writing style that lends well to poems.
