"My treason is a lump caught in my throat, refusing to be swallowed or grunted away." pg. 13. In the beginning of the book the main character, Maurice, has to let go of his dog Gearstick to Bess, the cleaner, and her family, because he couldn't take care of him anymore. As Maurice was trying to hand Gearstick to his new family, he can't help but reminisce about the times he had with Gearstick, he is then forced to close the door to a confused Gearstick... In this metaphor the "lump" in Maurice's throat is compared to treason after he had just let go of his friend Gearstick and the way Maurice says “refusing to be swallowed of grunted away” shows that his treasonous action towards his friend can never be forgotten. This quotation is significant because it starts one of Maurice's conflicts in the book.

Park begins to realize that Eleanor looks over at the comics he reads so he decides to leave a copy for her. Exchanging comics and music allows them to form a bond with each other.

"Now I know what the soldiers in the Trojan horse felt like, he thought."(page 150).

After Trey is able to infiltrate the population police, he finds Mark in the basement of the Grant's house where he and a guard make a deal. In order for Trey to complete his part of the deal, he needs to leave the Grant's house and set out on the road. Once he leaves, He eventually comes across two population police officers that ask him about his assignment. Since the uniform Trey is using outranks the officers, he tells them the information is classified and they leave causing Trey to think about how he outsmarted them. This quotation is an example of an Allusion. The allusion in this quotation is a reference to the wooden Trojan Horse that was used by the Greeks to infiltrate soldiers into Troja. This quotation is significant because it shows how Trey is willing to do anything, including tricking and infiltrating the population police, in order to save his friends.

'It helped me to trust in people.' the Englishman said.'"
(pg 92)

After reaching the Oasis, both Santiago and the Englishman are asked to turn in firearms and weapons. That is when this exchange happens. This quotation is an example of irony because the Englishman needs an intimidating thing to trust people that won't put people's trust in him. (page 31) After Steven finishes practicing with his drums Mr W and a couple of students clap for him. After that the quote begins and Mr W gives Steven some tips on his stiffness. This is an example of an idiom because he isnt really a "hotdog" like the quote refers to.This quote is signifacant because this is around the time that they were taking his brother Jeffery to the hospital in order to get dignosed if he had an illness or not.

"She's like a black widow. She eats dudes like you for breakfast." (page. 53) Sloane, her boyfriend James , and their best friend Miller, are at Miller's house talking about Lacey. Lacey was Miller's girlfriend before she got taken to The Program. Lacey recently got out of The Program, but she doesn't remember Miller. While they're at Miller's house, they start talking about the first time Miller and Lacey met each other. When they first met Miller told Sloane and James that she was the kind of girl he was looking for, the kind who would make his mother mad. James then told Miller that Lacey is like a black widow, which fascinated him. Lacey is being compared to a black widow. This quotation is significant because this leads to Miller wanting to get her to remember him, which just leads him to getting into trouble.

A theme from Halo: The fall of Reach

"Mendez lowered his voice, 'Not every mission has simple objectives or comes to a logical conclusion,'" page 84. This quote was said by Chief Petty Officer Mendez, a military official for the United Nations Space Command and the main character's mentor, to John 117, the main character and a member of the experimental SPARTAN 2 project. What had just happened was that a 15 John had received a "mission" to fight 4 of violent soldiers called Orbital Drop Shock Troopers as a display of strength. He has to do this because an organization called The Office of Naval Intelligence needed to monitor the results of their newest project of augmented super soldiers called the SPARTAN 2 project. However, during this test, John killed all 4 of the soldiers bare handed which was good for ONI but not so good for John. This causes mental turmoil for him because even though he did his job correctly, it costed him 4 of his allies' lives that died because of him. So when he goes over this with his mentor Chief Mendez where he says this. This is an example of a theme due to the fact that this is a lesson that the reader learns but also has relevance to the story. This is such an important moment for John because he realizes that not everything has a definitive answer. His entire character up to this point is to strive for a set in place victory. But when confronted in these situations his mind can't comprehend that there is no right answer. So he learns from this that there will never be a "best" solution in many situations. And he changes to not try to be perfect but to do the best for everyone.

"I have mouse-brown cowlick-y hair, glasses that are about an inch thick, and braces that look like I tries to swallow a train wreck." page 4. Steven is describing the way he looks because he is comparing himself to his "favored" brother when he is at school after his teacher told him to write in his journal about something he hates the most. This quotation is an example of character traits because Steven is simply describing the way he looks. This quote is significant because it shows the reader exactly how nerdy he seems and why he wouldn't be the favorite.

"I've never seen my mom take one of our injuries so seriously before." page 19. Steven is telling the reader how he has never seen his mom take him or his brothers injuries as serious before until now when Steven was up one morning with his brother trying to make him some oatmeal for breakfast but as he set his brother on the kitchen stool, moments later his brother falls off and hits himself against the counter with a really bad nosebleed. After this happens, Steven and Jeffery's parents find them and their mom starts to panic and yell as she says shes going to take Jeffery to the emergency room. This quotation is an example of foreshadowing. This quotation is significant because it signals the reader that since Steven and Jeffery's mom is so serious about this situation it might lead them into finding out something serious.
