Passage #1- "I ought to be chief," Jack said with simple arrogance, "because I'm chapter chorister and head boy. I can sing a C sharp." (22)

Upon their arrival on the island the boys were called together by Ralph blowing the conch. Once they were all gathered they decided that they would need to hold a vote to find their chief. Jack wanted to become chief based on what he had been before the crash, but to the rest of the boys, it did not matter at all. They saw Ralph in the position of power because of his outward appearance and the fact that he had been the one to bring them together. Nevermind the fact that Jack was more experienced in the role of leader.

Passage #2- "Nobody knows where we are," said Piggy. He was paler than before and breathless." (34)

During one of the meetings the boys hold they begin to discuss the possibility of being rescued. Everyone has hope that they will be found and whisked back to safety. Everyone, that is, except Piggy. From the start of the book he has been established as someone who tries to state the facts and get the others to see reason, but they ignore him and blunder on forward. Most of the boys view him as weak and make fun of him for his asthma and his weight, so when he makes this comment no one listens to him and the meeting turns to the matter of making fire with little recognition of what Piggy said.

Passage #3- "People don't help much." He wanted to explain how people were never quite what you thought they were." (54)

Because of the fact that they are stranded on the island, it becomes very important for the boys to work together. But many of the boys are not motivated to help Ralph build shelters or to join Jack's band of hunters, most are content to laze about, not doing anything to help. This greatly frustrates Ralph as he needs more help than just Simon to build shelters, when he says this it seems that he is referencing how eager everyone was to work together at the beginning, but now it seems only he, Jack, and Simon are willing to pitch in.

Passage #4- "In his other life Maurice had received chastisement for filling a younger eye with sand. Now, though there was no parent to let fall a heavy hand, Maurice still felt the unease of wrong doing." (60)

Even though there is no one on the island who would scold Maurice-- one of the so called 'littluns'-- he still felt the guilt of having destroyed Percival's sand castle. This brings up the often debated topic of inner good versus inner evil. The boys want to act however they want to, freely and without a care in the world, but deep down inside of themselves they know that they should not. When they first arrived on the island, their first order of business was to elect someone to lead them and to tell them what to do. Even though they make it seem like they want to have no rules and run wild, they need the structure, without it they would loose any semblance of who they are.

Passage #5- "He became absorbed beyond mere happiness as he felt himself exercising control over living things." (61)

One of the littluns had wandered off after his castle was broken apart by Maurice and began to play at the shore as the tide came in. This could be interpreted as a very innocent thing, something that everyone has done at least once in their life, but on this island it holds slightly more weight. As the little boy, Henry, played in the water he felt happy about the fact that he was in control of something living, much like the older boys on the island. Both Jack and Ralph want to hold power over the boys, but that is not possible. Much like the small creatures in the tide, the boys are pushed about and controlled by one person on the island, which usually leads to unrest. The tensions will inevitably rise between Jack and Ralph as they try and grab for the position of chief.
