In 1994 NRL player Ian Roberts became the first NRL player in history to come out.

"It f***ed with everyone's mind," Roberts remembers with a grin in the lobby of his hotel. "It didn't make sense to some people because, at that stage of my career, I had earned a reputation as a bit of a brawler but I had no problems saying I liked men.

"This is not what gay people are," he mimics. "This is not what a man is supposed to be. I'm like, 'yes it is. I'm gay. I'm as gay as it gets. You don't get any gayer than me'. Sexually, women do nothing for me. Never have. I have been with loads of women, more women than men, but it wasn't about me questioning what it is to be gay, it was other people. It was like, f***, you deal with it. It's not my fault. I'm gay."

(Brown, Michael. 2007.

In this article, Jack Drescher MD discusses the psychological effects of concealing homosexual behaviours commonly known as being "in the closet". Drescher argues that during childhood, children are exposed to hetero normative behaviours and attitudes which make gay children feel as though their feelings are unnatural or perverse (1). Drescher suggests that the act of "coming out" gives greater life enrichment and allows homosexual men and women the ability and freedom to define themselves outside of their sexual feelings. The inability to "come out" Drescher argues can lead to acute psychological distress (2).

While Michael Jackson was not homosexual, this example is incredibly interesting to me when discussing masculinity and homosexuality. Jackson juxtaposes overtly heterosexual content with his physical appearance which does not fit a conventional masculine image. Jackson was challenging social perceptions and assumptions of masculinity while also addressing questions surrounding his sexuality in the media at the time. Jackson's lyrics, particularly the use of the term keep it "in the closet", allude to the terminology commonly used in regard to secretive sexual orientation.

Anderson argues that since the 1990's homophobic culture and language among American college students has become less prevalent (81). According to Anderson, in male "team culture" over the last 100 years has become less physically intimate and an aversion to homosexual behaviors was created as social awareness of homosexuality grew (82). Anderson suggests that a growing acceptance of homosexuality as part of normal social and human nature has decreased active homophobia in American colleges and allowed for a more inclusive environment for men regardless of their sexual orientation. "This inclusivity simultaneously permits an expansion of heteromasculine boundaries, so that boys are able to express physical tactility and emotional intimacy without being homosexualized by their behaviours" (Anderson and McCormack, 2010).

Anderson, Eric and Mark McCormack, 2010.
