Gardiner Park

For my walking research, I went to Gardiner Park in Bay Shore, NY. I chose this location because it is very close to my house, and it is very peaceful and scenic. I like to go to this place because of the sights and many trails it has. It is easy to clear my mind here because not too many people are around. Most people who come to this place are dog owners; they just want to take in the scenic views as well.

This place is distinct because it is in a populated area, but it is where people come to relax and destress. The history of the park makes the atmosphere because without its history, there would be as many trails, and it wouldn't be an interesting place. The park is very relaxed, and many people walk for fun, to relax, or to walk their dogs. Most people keep to themselves, but you can easily strike up a conversation with someone about nature or their dog.

Everyone has entry and is welcome to Gardiner Park. Most people who come here have a dog or come here to clear their mind. People who may feel excluded from this area are people from neighborhoods not surrounding the park. They may feel unwelcome. There is no economics area. These are factors for thia is completely free for everyone. There are no social markers for this area. This area attracts all sorts of people from all walks of life. It attracts people of all ages, races, religions, and genders. The area is well maintained, so it shows that the people that work their, and the people who visit care about it, and want to have clean/ safe areas.

Since I grew up near this park, I know quite a bit about it. I know that lots of people go there and there is a lot to see. My personal experiences and background may influence how I view this set because many people may not find it as interesting as I do. Many other people my age may want to find somewhere else to walk and aren't interested in exploring nature or walking these trails. I would assume the people who walk here are just there to take in the sights, relax, and explore a bit. There are multiple ways to find information about this park. You could always do research just by going online or going to the library. You could also go to the park and read the history of it there on the display signs.

Walking research can and will influence our view of the spaces and bodies we inhabit. Walking research makes us more aware of ourselves and what is going on around us. It makes us aware of the history of a certain location and how we as individuals should feel in certain places.

After completing my walk, I wonder who exactly may not feel welcomed in this space. When I walked into this space, I saw people of all different backgrounds and ages. It did not feel like this area was restricted to certain groups of people; it felt like everyone could enjoy this space. I would like to explore this space more, maybe get to walk some of the trails and see some sights I didn't get to this time around. This walking experience will influence how I walk in other areas because I will now be more observant. The act of walking and observing made me experience things I wouldn't have noticed before. It made me see certain parts of the park I wouldn't have seen before. This research method made me more aware of my surroundings, and it made me more socially sound. I included many pictures on the padlet to show what the park was all about. The article Understand Walking As A Research Method, by the American India Foundation helped me understand the project. The article really showed me how I should focus on major themes of walking and what I should focus on while conducting my research.
