Five USC Trojans Make it to NFL's Top 50 College Football Players List

California-based businessman Mark Heiden received his MBA from the University of Southern California. He has since held executive positions in companies such as Morgan Stanley and RBC Dain Rauscher. He has been serving as the managing director of investments at Wedbush Securities since 2013. During his free time, Mark Heiden enjoys watching football and follows the football team of his alma mater, the USC Trojans.

The USC football program has recently been recognized as home to some of the best players in the college football scene. The National Football League (NFL) released a list of the top 50 players in college football today and five slots went to Trojans. USC is only second to Alabama in terms of the number of players featured on the list.

The highest-ranking Trojan on the list was Sam Darnold, who snagged the spotlight after his performance at last season's Rose Bowl where he had five touchdowns and threw for over 450 yards. He is followed by junior linebacker Cameron Smith and corner Iman Marshall who landed on the 14th and 16th spot, respectively. Notably, Marshall is the highest-ranking cornerback on the list.

Meanwhile, junior outside linebacker Porter Gustin – who came in second on the team last year for making nearly 70 tackles – was in the 28th spot, while junior Ronald Jones finished in the 43rd place.

To view the complete list, visit NFL.com.

Tips for Growing Roses

A financial executive by profession, Mark Heiden has served as managing director of investments at Wedbush Securities in Newport Beach, California, since 2013. In his free time, Mark Heiden enjoys growing roses.

To grow well, a rose needs exposure to full sunlight and nutrient-rich soil. A steady supply of organic matter is essential, as well. Many gardeners choose to enhance their soil with compost or similar treatments, while others choose to use formulated garden fertilizer. Roses in pots are particularly dependent on such products, as they cannot extend their roots into the soil to get the nutrients that they need.

The soil should be moist but not soaked. Experts recommend approximately an inch of water per week, so long as the water can seep into the soil and get to the roots. Ideally, the gardener should water the ground directly, as excess moisture on the leaves can cause rot.

Finally, conscientious rose care requires regular pruning and deadheading. The gardener should prune all branches to 6 inches before planting so that the bush can use its energies to strengthen its roots. A thorough pruning of dead branches should take place in early spring of each year, while removal of faded blooms should occur consistently throughout the season.

Iman Marshall Nominated for Prestigious Thorpe Award

Mark Heiden received his MBA from the University of Southern California in 1975. Since then, he has worked as a senior executive for companies such as RBC Dain Rauscher and Morgan Stanley. He currently serves as a managing director of investments at Wedbush Securities, where he also personally deals with approximately 400 clients. In his free time, Mark Heiden enjoys watching college football and follows the USC Trojans.

There is good news for USC Trojans fans. Junior cornerback Iman Marshall has been shortlisted for the Jim Thorpe Award, an important recognition which is given to the best defensive back of the year. Marshall was one of the 45 players to be assessed throughout the regular season. The award recipient will be named on December 7.

USC is no stranger to having its players nominated for the prestigious award. Mark Carrier became USC's first Thorpe recipient in 1989. Just last year, Adoree Jackson bested other defensive backs from all over the country to give USC its second Thorpe award. Marshall's nomination gives rise to the hope that USC may be able to pull a back-to-back win.

A superstar in his own right, Marshall was considered to be a top-tier prospect prior to entering USC. He proved himself worthy of the hype by starting 25 games in his first two seasons. During his sophomore year, he earned an All-Pac-12 honorable mention when he led a strong campaign opposite Jackson. As a junior, he is now USC's top-ranking cornerback with the potential to make it to the top of the Pac-12.
