“When Halloween is over and Trick r' Treat is done, what do you think witches do for leisure time and fun?” What Do Witches Do, written by Susan J. Atkinson and illustrated by Elizabeth Todd Doyle, answers this question as it follows six witches with their own unique passions and identities as they fill their free time. The witches do everything from paying bills to painting to playing at the park. What Do Witches Do is a celebration of everything that makes us unique, and Doyle’s whimsical illustrations represent diverse characters to complement the book’s theme of embracing diversity.

What Do Witches Do, with its range of character representation, is all about embracing diversity and will teach children to love what makes them and their peers unique. Each witch has a different body type and style expression, representing people of all sorts. The witches’ unique talents and interests are also highlighted through their activities as a part of what makes them special. These factors make What Do Witches Do a fantastic story for teaching children 4-8 years old about diversity and embracing one’s passions. Not only does the book teach a valuable lesson, it does so with vibrant and fun illustrations that reference familiar Canadian and Ottawan landmarks, such as the Mayfair theater and TD Bank, that are sure to engage young readers.

What Do Witches Do is a poetic work with vibrant illustrations that follows the lives of witches as they pursue their passions outside of Halloween. Atkinson’s poetry is written in approachable, age-appropriate verbiage, making it a perfect addition for covering a variety of text styles in this age group. The book is excellent for supporting the Ontario Grade 1 Curriculum goals of identifying text patterns (Reading 2.2) and elements of style (Reading 2.4). This can be done by encouraging students to analyse the poetic structure and patterns within. The curriculum goals of demonstrating understanding (Reading 1.4) and extending understanding (Reading 1.6) can also be reinforced by leading students to discuss the book’s message of social acceptance and connect this message to their personal experiences.

Wong, W., & Ministry of Education.
