Fluency strips can be tailored to meet individual students needs. Students who are beginning to read or struggling to read, can use a fluency strip with letters and guide their finger from one dot to the next and stopping to read the letters. Teachers can provide more advanced readers strips with sentences on them where they have to move their finger from dot to dot reading the words in a sentence.

Families can support fluency at home by reading to their child. When a parent reads to their child, they model what words and reading sound like, which helps their child hear and match their voice to their parents (Target the Problem: Fluency, 2025).

Teachers can provide families with communication differences books on tape to read with their children. Families, including their child, can follow along in a book while the story is being read to them. Hearing someone else read while looking at the sentences in a book can help students not only understand how to pronounce words but also see where sentences start and stop.

"I spy"' can be adapted to meet the needs of diverse learners. Picture cards with classroom objects can be used to ask students with limited abilities to "spy" those items. This game can benefit all learners because it promotes peer interactions and language development.

Rhyming games can help students with diverse learning needs because they can be presented with the use in a multi-sensory way that can use picture cards, verbal cues, and movements that are perfect additions to keep students of all abilities engaged in learning.

Family members can take turns looking out the window to look for different objects. After an object is found, they can take turns with their child finding words that rhyme! Rhyming helps with chunking and blending words, increasing children's vocabulary, and builds the skills needed to listen and manipulate phonemes, which leads to increased literacy skils (Friday, 2024).

Not all families have the same resources, and they may have other factors that may need to be taken into consideration when helping their children at home. For families who may have communication, cultural, or things like a family/housing dynamic that may effect their child's learning phonemic awareness, here is something that teachers can do to help these families support their children at home.

Teachers can send home a copy of a book that has pictures, predictable language, and words that rhyme for families who may be facing some disadvantages at home. Reading books that incorporate all of these things can help children have fun while playing with language that builds necessary literacy skills (Friday, 2024).

Another way families can support their child learning phonics would be through a program called Reading Eggs. This is a fun and interactive way for children to engage in learning by building phonics skills with the use of fun characters, songs, and rewards (Phonics and Reading : Nurturing confidence from the very beginning, 2025). Phonics is the process of connecting the smallest units of sound (phonemes) with its corresponding letter/s (grapheme), and Reading Eggs teaches children to read individual letters in words and merge them together to sound out the whole word (Phonics and Reading : Nurturing confidence from the very beginning, 2025).
