Mental Health Issues

Van Gogh had serious mental health problems, like depression, anxiety, and episodes of psychosis. He once cut off a part of his own ear after arguing with another artist Paul Gauguin. He spent time in psychiatric hospitals, including one in Saint-Rémy-de-Provence in France, where despite his mental health conditions he continued to paint during his treatment.

Artistic Style And Connection With Mental Health

Van Gogh’s mental health influenced his artistic style. After the incident with his ear, he painted Self-Portrait with Bandaged Ear. In this artwork, he used sharp contrasts and somber tones in order to reflect his pain. While in the psychiatric hospital in Saint-Rémy-de-Provence, his style became even more expressive. He used bold, swirling brushstrokes, intense colors, and emotional movement. While there, he painted his famous artwork The Starry Night, which is a clear example of how his inner struggles and issues shaped his artwork to be so different and unique. His mental health problems led him to be more creative, which led him to create his famous artworks.

The Man Who Mistook His Wife for a Hat

This neurological condition caused her to completely ignore the left side of space, she would eat only from the right side of her plate, put makeup on only the right side of her face, and even turn only to the right when searching for things.

Despite having normal vision and strength, Mrs. S was unaware of her neglect and denied anything was wrong. Her brain no longer processed the left side of her world, not because she couldn’t see it, but because her attention and awareness were impaired due to right-hemisphere damage.

It has the power to make people decide things faster bringing urgency to the message -used for companies to announce sales or fast food brands have red in their color palette to elicit a physical response, making people hungrier and stimulating their appetite.

Orange: Bright and full of energy, it is happy, playful, fun, powerful, and attention-grabbing for any brand or message. Many tech brands use orange, as it passes the optimism and youthful energy a tech startup might want to convey.

Yellow: It is cheerful and adds a pop of refreshment to the palette. It is a strong and accent color, which draws the eye, and like red, it can also act as a siren for alerts and bold, informational messages.

Green: Money, trees, food, and traffic lights all use green, and the shade of green conveys vastly different messages. Connects to nature, a healthy, soothing and relaxing feel. However, if super-vibrant green, it’s more refreshing and energetic.

Blue: Is cold, calming, soothing, and friendly, but it can also take on a professional tone and it is a great neutral choice. It is a trustworthy color, which scores of brands in all industries to build a positive image for themselves. Also, blue conveys sadness and isolated feelings.

Purple: An elegant color that passes loyalty (builds trust), mysterious, feminine, royalty, and luxurious.

Pink: It is associated with femininity and turns nurturing and playful, but also a powerful color. It makes people think of passion, love, and youth. However, when an intense tone transmits urgency, while a minimal, dusty pink is more calming and neutral.

White: symbolizes simplicity, purity, and cleanliness. Gives contrast to designs, and provides a neutral slate to avoid crowding in designs.

Brown: It is neutral and natural, has a warmth to it and a feeling of security, and is a very earthy color evoking natural world elements. Great for an organic, wholesome feel.

Gray: A neutral shade, almost always used as a secondary color or accent. It tempers or complements any color and serves as a quiet background. Also, it balances from neutral to dreary and boring.

Black: A power color that adds gravity and strength to any message. If added on an edge of design, or a sophisticated and serious tone, black is a classic.

Circles: Create a sense of community, wholeness, and eternity. They feel protective, gentle, and inclusive. Frequently found in sentimental or humanitarian efforts.
Squares: Suggest authority, symmetry, and support. They feel durable and firm. Common designs that display strength or hierarchy use squares.
Triangles: Indicate purpose, movement, and strength. Triangles that are vertical and point up suggest drive or dominance. Triangles that are horizontal and point down suggest weakness or warning. They create friction or suggest activity.

The Black Panther Party (BPP), founded in 1966 in Oakland, California, by Huey Newton and Bobby Seale, was a revolutionary organization. It emerged during the Civil Rights Movement as a response to police brutality and systemic racism in the United States. The group had no voice and had to advocate for self-defense and justice in Black communities. Also, due as Black Americans being excluded from housing, jobs & benefits in the Post-WWII economic boom with middle-class expansion, they fought for the creation of social programs (food, education, healthcare).

The main area, centralized in the Orange wall on the 7th floor, will be the timeline "circled above". This will be the area where the three subjects' main ideas will be displayed. In the middle of the science part (the brain), there will be the brain developed by Angela, and arrows going out of it in the style of a mind map that will have the main topics seen in science. Other than following Angela's ideas, the button on each lobe is the part in the mind map will light up accordingly. Ex: button in the frontal lobe, the arrow from the mind map that talks about the frontal lobe will light up.

Moving to the literacy, in the timeline, the thing that will be up there is a puzzle-like appearance of the main ideas of the stories we read (The Man Who Mistook His Wife by a Hat, Eyes Right, Lost Meriner, and The Dog Beneath the Skin). And the other 8 pieces of the puzzle are either connections that the story has to the project, or the diagnostics of the stories. The viewer will need to read and summary of the stories (the only pieces labeled) and try to figure out the diagnostics of each story and the connections.

The next in the timeline would be the art area, where there will be a text summarizing the main ideas of color psychology, shape psychology, and fashion as a political tool. To give an introduction to the information that the viewer will need to complete the other activities. And besides that, there will be a projector from the ceiling that will be projecting two circles of opposing colors so that viewers can walk into the colors (red and blue) and see and feel the feelings these colors create according to color psychology.

Moving away from the timeline, if you look to the right, still on the art side, there will be two flipbooks that will be divided, with the SO1 created by all 10th-grade students, so that viewers can go through the photos. And each photo will be numarized 1,2,3,4... because under the flipbooks there will be the iPads with the corresponding soundtrack to the number on the photo. And the intention of the viewer is to hear and see the photo and try to not only find the emotion but also apply the color and shape psychology accordingly. THE INTERACTIVE TITLE ABOVE WILL BE: APPLY IT, FIND OUT THE EMOTION. In a more permanent exhibition, the iPads can't be hung on the wall, so for a more permanent fit, the iPads would be leaning on the table.

To the left of the timeline in the literacy part there will be first a huge oversized model of the book "The Man Who Mistook His Wife by a Hat" and under it there will be eassy extracts from the students falling out of the book, so that parents and viewers can see directly the relationship of the book withe eassy writen by students in bthe project. And on the orange wall directly there will be some posters of the character profiles, so that parents can have an overview that it was not just essays that were written based on the book. Showing variety.

Moving out of the wall and that area, there will be a table with an interactive title: NOW IT'S YOUR TURN. That will be about how the viewers will apply and use the knowledge obtained from the text in the timeline of art, and see how fashion as a political tool was used with the black panthers. There will be taped down pictures of the fashion statement that they did like, the leather jacket, the hair, the button/pin, and there will be doll figures and such clothing that imitates the ones of the black panther, and the viewers will dress the dolls just like the balck panthers used to.

The last area would be the hanged up kind of room where the walls are made out of the optical illusions and the text of artists with mental illnesses toghther, in a very diffrent way to display the artworks of the students and the bviewers will step inside the "room" of opptical illusions and inside there will be a table will papers, pencils, sharpies, erasers, and two taped down easy opptical (those four steps) illusions so that the viewers can atempted to do the same.

The last step is the gineally that provides further information about science and biology, and then in the end there is a questionnaire for the viewers to answer to test their knowledge.

The initial idea was to have the curatorial text inside the brain, and as the parents take out the pieces, it would be revealed, but this will not happen. So the curatorial text will be beside the timeline as a summary of the whole project in general.

The Inside Out” project focused on the concept of perception, both from a biological perspective where students analysed the methodology of the brain, including the function and importance of neurons, lobes of the brain and then, students utilise the knowledge obtained from science lessons to individually come upon with a lab report with questions focused on how external or internal stimuli may influence the development and functionality of the brain. Perception was also analysed from an artistic perspective, where students learned how shapes, colors, and image composition changed how a movie scene and or photograph could be interpreted. Additionally, perception was also observed and analysed through optical illusion, where students learned about optical illusion to tackle the aspects of perception by learning optical techniques such as motion illusion, in which a person can see an image moving even though it is motionless. Finally, during English classes, students were faced with Oliver Sacks' popular book, "The Man Who Mistook His Wife for a Hat,” which involves various case studies of individuals with unusual neurological conditions, in which most of them discussed neurological disorders that affected perception. Hence, students deeply analysed the protagonist of each case study and then later on, created an expository essay by relating both science and arts with a case study from Oliver Sacks’ book.
