First Post: Why are you taking this class

The reason I am taking this class is because it is an additional course that I am able to take to complete my prerequisites. I chose this class specifically because it seems interesting. I find learning about the human, its perspectives, why things are the way they are and anything related with the mind. This class seems like it can relate to the multiple perspectives that are viewed in the world by people and will be at least something I find interesting while finishing my prerequisites plan.

Career? How will it help? How will it help with navigating/coping in life?

I am interested in pursuing nursing as my career path. Sociology can help me understand on a deeper level how and what affected my patients health and this seems like it will create a connection between me and the patient because I will be able to understand he/she better.
Sociology will be able to help me understand myself and being able to better understand others around me. It can help me analyze the communication between people and myself.

Culture: Can tattoos be Taboo? (social norms, ethnocentrism, cultural relativism) 1/27-

In the video " Can tattoos be Taboo" It talks about how it has been dated back about 300 years and there are different significance in a variety of cultural groups. Considering now days that many people get tattoos in their bodies it is considered normal because it is in the social norms where almost everyone has one. When walking out, it's common to see people with tattoos and is not anything out of the normal. Given the fact that tattoos may also be a cultural thing, traditional tattoos may be seen as inappropriate, unprofessional, or out of place from their own cultural norms through the ethnocentrism lens. Through cultural relativism the view on tattoos may be seen as respect and acknowledging that person's practice. One person could be getting a cultural tattoo yet it would be deemed as inappropriate if that person does not look at them through their perspective rather than their own. People who accepts others cultural traditions and art would be them looking at others tattoos through the perspective of cultural relativism. In another video where it says tattoos are taboo in Japan a lady has a tattoo that is special to her yet she is asked to get it removed or cover it up at her job because it is inappropriate to the place. This action is not widely accepted in Japan yet to the lady it is a special tattoo to her where so loved about herself but no longer loves anymore after not being accepted by other people. This is an example of ethnocentrism where her traditional tattoo is not considered normal in others. I think that many people get tattoos for different reasons and are happy about it but if another person does not accept that persons choice or understands where that person is coming from it could destroy the person's feelings who has the tattoo and also destroy the person who is judging the other because it could form a bad relationship between the two. If everyone were to look through different perspectives and cultural relativism then it would clear up some problems.

In this house lays a tall big rectangle with two sides that stick out at the end with a flat board that runs from one end to the other end horizontally. The board is covered with a hood that opens and once opened has many white and black rectangular prisms inside. More white rectangular objects are shown than the black prisms. People that go up to it seem to bring sound as they press down on these white and black prisms. Some are able to produce pleasing melodies to the ear while others produce treacherous loud sounds. At the bottom of the large object are 3 rounded figures almost rectangular shape yet smooth and many people who go near the giant object move there leg pressing down onto one of those 3 rectangular shapes. This big object that I am describing is instrument called a piano.
