I thought of the marking period as a whole. The most lift that I get is a fresh start with a new marking period. It's also the one that creates the most anxiety. The part that I feel frustrated wtih is the end of the marking period becuase I want to close out of grades so that all students can catch up, but doing work without a grade can lead to a drop off and I hate that fact! I am trying to play with the idea of learning for the sake of learning when I have developing brains - teenagers!

When looking at these words the following are positive words that are easily seen daily in my classroom instruction: technology, differentiation, higher-level thinking, flipped learning, standards-based and student choice. This year we have used asynchronous and synchronous buzzwords can't we just say live instruction/student paced...

Positive:

technology - I am learning to embrace technology more and find that it allows a whole world of possibilities for students to show understanding.

data - as a former math teacher I love data. Data makes me comfortable and feel secure in understanding student learning and what direction my teaching should take.

higher-level thinking - this reminds me of why I wanted to be a teacher. I want to challenge students and make them stretch from their comfort zone. I love seeing ah-ha moments that arise from higher-level thinking.

standards based - This is similar to data. I like knowing where my students should be heading and where they are at in relation to the end goal. Standards based teaching/ grading allows for that to happen. It also allows teachers to see areas of improvement in their teaching because you can compare students across the board to one-another more easily since everyone has the same standard.

students choice - although I don't like to relinquish all control, I like to have students take the lead when it comes to how they want to learn or prove their learning. I like the idea of limited choices. It allows each student feel a little more comfortable.

Negative:

differentiation - I think that this term was just so overused when I was getting my undergrad and masters degrees that it just sparks a feeling of overworked

common core - this is a good idea in theory but comes with so many negative feelings from parents and the community that it is hard to feel good when hearing it.

flipped learning - this makes me nervous. I like control (as most teachers do). I worry that students will not do the work at home and I will end up doing double the work in class to make sure they are where they need to be.

researched-based strategies - this is a term that my brain automatically equates with "more work" "new ideas" "change what you're doing yet again." Its almost a feeling of uneasy dread.
