"We are one in all and all in one. There are no men but only the great WE,
One, indivisible and forever."

Anthem follows Equality on his journey to self-discovery and individualism. Equality has been different from his brothers, since the day he was born. Too tall, too smart, too quick; he didn't fit in.
One day when he is doing his job as a street sweeper, he discovers a small tunnel underground. He continues going back to "the Discovery", because it is the only place where the cities rules do not apply. In the tunnel, he creates electricity. Will the council celebrate this new invention or reject these new ideas?

Individualism:
Individualism is what makes a society unique. Without individualism, a society cannot prosper.

Evidence- Every citizen in Anthem talked, walked, and acted the same. In their society, there was nothing unique or distinguishable about each citizen.

Courage:
To have courage is to fight for what you believe in, even when the outcome is uncertain.

Evidence- Equality continued to create and invent, even when it was declared illegal and evil. He was unsure what would happen to him, if he shared his inventions, but he did anyways.

Determination:
Determination and persistance is what allows a person to succeed.

Evidence- Equality continued to protect his creation of electricity, despite the fact that his city wanted to destroy it. His determination to protect his invention, lead to him finding a safe haven in the woods.

Love:
Love is the source and root of courage. Love can make people do crazy things.

Evidence- Liberty's love for Equality lead her to abandon her old life and follow him into the Uncharted Forest.

Friendship:
Friendship is built on an unspoken bond of trust. Friendship brings a bit of goodness into a cruel world.

Evidence- Equality trusted International to keep quiet about his discovery. International protected him, even when Equality was banished.

The Uncharted Forest symbolizes two things for Equality. It symbolizes the unknown, because Equality doesn't know what his life will be like when he runs away from the city. The forest also symbolizes freedom, because it is a "safe haven" from the city. There are no rules or restrictions in the forest, Equality is free to make his own decisions .

Towards the end of the novel, Equality chooses to rename himself. He picks the name Prometheus for himself, and the name Gaea for Liberty. The name Prometheus is symbolic, because Prometheus was the Greek God who gave fire to the people, and was sentenced to eternal damnation. Equality created electricity and tried to give it to the citizens, but was banished instead.

Equality's city thrives on the idea that all people should look the same, act the same, and live the same. When Equality discovers electricity, he also discovers that the city's firm belief in collectivism, isn't the only way to live. Joining Equality on his journey to self-discovery, will also teach you the importance of individualism. When our world is dependent on "sameness", our people become bland, mindless, followers, where we live to reproduce and die. Anthem teaches the significance of free choice and originality

From the beginning of the novel, I enjoyed the dystopian setting. I found it fascinating that their world was set in the future, but their only source of light is from candles or the sun. I also loved the theme of individualism and identity in Anthem. It taught me a valuable lesson, that without individuality, the world is dull and dreary. Overall, the plot and the lessons Anthem taught was what I found the most captivating.

Anthem is only 105 pages, so each plot twist occurred extremely quickly. I disliked how short the novel was, because as soon as I began to connect with Equality, the novel was over. I was also discontent with the conclusion, because it was a cliff hanger. I wish Ayn Rand would have continued writing, so we could find out if Equality saved his friends.
