They became teachers before becoming computers

They lived and worked in the south

Takes place in the 1960's

Dorthy Vaughan,Mary Jackson,Kathrine Johnson,and Christine Darden are all African American citizens and had to grow up and live with segregation.

There are four women, Dorothy Vaughan, Mary Jackson, & Katherine Johnson, and Christine Darden.

There is an associacion called NACA: National Adcisory Committee for Aeronautics.

Dorothy Vaughan was a pioneer so she joined NACA. (because it was for the study of flight.

Mary Jackson was the first African American woman to move up ranks to become and engineer at NACA.

Kathrine Johnson was an African American woman who was known to put the first American in orbit around earth.

Christine Darden was an African American woman who became one of the worlds first leading experts on supersonic flight.

It was hard for them at the time because there was big segragation laws making it harder for them.

Female computers would get paid less than the male employees.

The managers weren't satisfied with the white people so they hired black people.

The black computers were assigned to work somewhere else.

They made signs for the bathrooms and put the words "Colored Girls"

Dorothy was trying to get jobs

She was born in 1910 Kansas City,Missouri

Her stepmom encouraged her to read

Dorothy Vaughan started teaching at R. R moon.

Dororthy Vaughan left the school because she would make more than what her avaradge at the school would.

There was a big plantation for women workers called the Camp Picketts's Laundry boiler.

Dororthy Vaughan was born in Kansas city Missouri 1910.

She was a math teacher

She needed money to provide for her family

It was hard for Dorothy to leave her children for work

She was thinking what would it be like to work with white people

She wonder how her children felt of her leaving for work

Between 1940 and 1942 the population had increased

At this time segragation laws were popular so they began to mke more even that colored people couldn't sit at the same end of the bus.

During the war, the woman would be working

Landlords double their rents

segregation made it harder to live

Even the white people complained about the rules

Dororthy Vaughan spent her day filling out paper work and making her pledge.

When she got droped off by the shuttle bus she saw and heard weird things. Not very wellcoming.

But it was all women.

East computers where for whites and west computers were for blacks.

Dororthy was barley wellcomed because they all had little time to say a long wellcome.

Only the colored women had a special seating saying "colored computers"

In the laboratory they felt equal but everywhere else they felt sperate/different again.

A woman named miriam tryed to remove it and take it the sign away but it would always be replaced.

Until the sign didn't apear again. They still sat together in a group but it was more peacfull without the sign and it stoped reminding them of how bad the segragation laws were, and how they had to be diferent.

Dorothy had to take a pledge

West computers were black woman

The west computers were segregated from the other people

Only the black woman had assigned seating

The colored signs were a reminder that they are different from the others

Miriam didn't care if she was gonna get fired for doing the right thing

Many white people didn't like MacLean because he was hanging out with the black people.

Dororthy didn't want to tell her parents about her job because at the time were she worked during ww2 it was the most powerfull weapon place.

Dororthy always wondered "What makes things fly?"

Langey had they best quality plane and nothing came even close to how good their planes were.

When Dororthy designed her plane she made it so it dropped an atomic bomb.

Dorothy couldn't couldn't tell anyone about her job

"NACA nuts" meant werido

She learned about how the planes move

the woman computers were often doing the numbers

She was happy to be helping the war, but she missed her children

In July 1944 she signed a new lease for a two bedroom aparement in Newsome Park, so her kids could come and visit.

V-J day was Victory over japan, at 7:00pm ww2 was over!

After ww2 ended and the 'men' were back there was less a need for woman workers, so they started getting pink slips (notices that they were losing their job)

Dorothy loved her new job but missed her children.

Some women looked forward to going home but others wanted to stay for the money

Harry F. Byrd was a white separatist and he treated segregation like it was a religion

Dorothy and Miriam became friends

The whole family went to see a famous person sing

Dororthy had a good salary -2,400 a year.

People at the Langley engineers wanted to build an aircraft faster than the speed of sound!

In 1949 Dororthy's boss suffered from mental breakdowns causing her to leave her job.

In April 1951 Dororthy became boss off "West Area Computing Pool."

Dorothy loved staying home taking care of her children

There was a segregated beach for black people

Dorothy sacrificed for her children

many woman quit their jobs to take care of their children

men were worried that the woman will be better than them

The women working in the West computing Office were always busy.

Mary didn't know where the colored bathrooms were

Mary was mad because she knew she was just as capable as the other woman

The engineer was a trust worthy person and understood what she was saying

She was not treated fairly but still kept working.

Kathrines brother-in-law told her about people hiring women at Langey.

Kathrines dream was to be a Mathimatican so her dreams might come true.

Kathrine started working at Langey in June 1953.

Katherine recived to join the division full time.

Black men would tend to hav emore racial issues than black women.

We are now going into detail about Christines story.

The US got worried that the soviet union was going to send missles/bombs.

Congress wanted reasherhers to stop worrying about spae but that didnt stop Langy.

In October 1958 they changed from NACA to NASA!

After that happened the West Computing dissolved and beame unpopular.

The worlds most interesting callendge is a human going to space.

They named prodject Mercury after the god of travelers.

Kathrines new focus was on the Mercury prodject.

The US wanted to beat the Russians to space so the US was the first people to get in space.

Mary Jackson was still focusing on making airplanes faster than supersonic speed.

For the race it wasn't just whites only it was all colors.

Levi won the derby race and he was the first colored one to win.

There were lots of protests around america going on at the time.

Theres a bunch of protests in hampton.

Nasa demanded contact with the astronaut in orbit.

Nasa decided to broadcast the Mercury-Redstone 3 on live tv.

President Kenedy was the one to decied that the US is going to send a man to the moon.

The russians hadn't stopped they sent an aircraft into space for a full day while Nasa wasn't doing so good.

It was the count down.

but there was somthing wrong with Friendship 7

It was fixed he was alive!

Kathrine Johnson had now become famous for sending the first man in orbit!

After that Martin luther kind made his "I have a dream" speach.

When Kathrine Johnson wasn't at work she would spend her time doing comunity service.

Cristine Darden was the next geniration.

Cristine and Kathrine got really close.

After that they had only six days to work until the first every man steps foot on the moon.

6 hundred million people watched at the first man had steped on the moon!

Katherine was a gifted Mathematician

Her and her husband were both teachers

Katherine's parents knew she was intelligent

she dreamed of being a mathematician and her dreams came true

She would help he older brother

Katherine got an offer that would get her more money

engineers worked with Katherine and knew she was the greatest

when the engineers looked over Katherine's work they were fascinated to see something they never saw before
