Which of the 10 Ethical Computing Guidelines do you think students violate most often?
- I believe that students often violate the 1st and 8th commandment. The 1st commandment states: "Thou shalt not use a computer to harm other people." Many students use computers to cyberbully and blackmail people. These behaviors create a negative online enviornment that can lead to negative effects in real life. People can harm themselves from the bullying and the bully can sometimes face criminal charges as well. Furthermore, the 8th commandment states: "Thou shalt not appropriate other people's intellectual output." Students often use the internet to plagiarize other's work to pass as their own. With the technology we have today, it's very difficult to get away with this. This can also have negative effects such as failing grades, suspension from school, lawsuits, and more.

Why do you think these violations occur?
- I believe that these violations occur for multiple reasons. Mostly, they occur because of the anonymity that a computer provides. Most of these violations would never be said or committed in person. However, people feel like they can hide behind a screen and act without consequence. Furthermore, these violations are a way to make money off of unsuspecting people. Through stealing other's work, selling other's work, or online schemes, people lose lots of money through these tactics. Whatever the reasoning, these violations create a dangerous online environment.

What do you think could be done to reduce or eliminate such unethical behavior?
- There are many strategies that could be implemented to reduce or eliminate such unethical behavior. Firstly, people could be required to read a document such as the "10 Commandments of Computer Ethics" before the purchase of a computer. Furthermore, they could be required to renew this agreement after a certain amount of years through a software update. Besides this, there can be more education and prevention courses done in schools, as early as elementary school. The younger that people build good online habits, the easier it will be to maintain a safe and healthy online community.
