Although I agree with my MT that math is universal and numbers have no language, there is still room to include more multicultural strategies in math. The link provided is an article that explains the importance of making math topics relate-able and humanizing math. An ELD strategy I used was images, one of the language learning targets was "I can make a relationships between an image and a vocabulary word in the learning target", when explaining new concepts to ELD students, providing images is a great strategy and if they can associate it to a new vocabulary word they are expanding their English proficiency. therefore puzzle pieces were used to explain compose and decomposing numbers.

Math journals and manipulates are also great resources for RtI. Math journals allow teachers and students to see their progression, and document their thinking. In the students math journals, their always encouraged to add a picture and use different strategies to solve. Math journals is where more 1-on-1 support is asked from students.

In centers, the lesson will provide time for students to write in their math journals. During this writing time gifted students can excel, and struggling students will be provided with support. Struggling students will be provided with a sentence stem-like "I had 5, I ate _ now I have _", and than after need to draw a picture that corresponds. Struggling students can demonstrate they are meeting the learning target in the enactive-concrete and iconic stage by modeling and drawing pictures. Gifted students are expected to provide and write their own word problem story and the corresponding number sentence. Gifted students are expected to meet the learning target in all three stages enactive, iconic and including the symbolic stage with abstract thinking.

This problem set from Engage-NY was used as a summative-assessment and as a self-assessment. The problem set was done individually by students, this provided me with many teaching indications like what to re-teach, what they know, what are the next steps, and how to group and differentiate students. As part of self-assessment students evaluated their work 1-on-1 with the teacher and went back and corrected their work, modeling how they got their answer .

Drawings and images are great teaching tools for kindergarten students when addressing misconceptions. Therefore a drawing was used to address key vocabulary words to avoid misconceptions. A whole puzzle was used to explain the keyword composing, meaning put together, and a scattered puzzle was used to explain the keyword decompose, meaning take apart. ELD can struggle with both words not being able to differentiate one from the other.
