A study from U-S conservation organization Oceana shows that labels on seafood are often false. The study proved the most common abuse is with wild salmon. Wild seafood is sold at a 30 per cent mark up over farmed fish at restaurants. Researchers ordering wild salmon at restaurants proved through D-N-A testing, the salmon were farmed. 

Kimberly Warner, a scientist that worked on the Oceana study, shares her thoughts on the issue.

Warner says the study which was conducted in major U-S cities during winter months, proved that salmon labelled as wild was in fact, farmed two out of three times.

Canada sells hundreds of millions of dollars’ worth of wild and farmed salmon to U-S markets every year. Wild salmon advocate Dean Chappelle (SHA-pel) says consumers buy wild salmon for the taste, and for ethical reasons. Chappelle says the fraud involved with wild salmon has big implications to the seafood industry.

Chappelle (SHA-pel) says it’s rare when charges are laid against companies mislabeling fish in both Canada and the U-S, and thinks penalties should be harder when they are. He would also like to see publicized D-N-A tests done on all seafood so consumers know what they are eating.
