Slaves start working in these tobacco fields when the're only little boys. They work from sunrise to sunset, almost without beaks. The slaves sleep in a small wooden cabin shared with another family, on mattresses on the floor. This is horrible, the masters have absolutely no respect for the people working for them. This is barbaric.

Walter, a slave, escaped from the fields. He runs in the forest at night, and hides during the day, not knowing where to go. He's tired and can't even remember the last time he had a meal and did not feel hungry. The slaves who tried to escape impress me a lot. They are very brave and I have a lot of respect for the people who fight for their quality of lives.

“Haven’t you ever had rhubarb pie?” a little girl from the family who rescued Walter said. Slaves almost ate nothing. A family of four was aloud less than half a bushel of cornmeal per week, and a tiny bit of fruits and meat. How could the masters expect good work by giving them this quantity of food only? I thing the slaves worked way too hard and way too long considering the small amount of food they were given.

Walter was sold when he was barely able to walk. He was sold without the agreement of his mother. That was the last time he ever saw his mother. I think that this is horrible because you are already selling a baby, but to make it even worst your doing it without the permission of his mother. This is definitely a shocking new information.

While is was reading on this website, I learned that if you were a slave, overseers could whip and beat slaves for many reasons. Here are some examples; not working hard enough, being late to the field or running away. Any slave, male, female or child, could receive these punishments, which shocks me very much.

He did this because he though about how he already has scars on his back even if he has never tried to run away. I get a chill down my spine just thinking about it.

Walter was a young man trying to get away from slavery. He was sold to a plantation in Kentucky when he was a todler. His mom was crying, begging the master to not go. It was too late, the horses left. The poor child was stuck on the back of a wagon. It was the last time Walter saw his mom. I find it horrible how young children get token away from there families. Slavery is not fair!

The wife packed Walter food for his journey.
That night John gives me a rough map of places I can stay, and tells me I should travel through Cleveland. From there, he says, I can cross Lake Erie into Canada. His wife packs me food for my journey, and I set out again, wondering how I will make it across the whole state of Ohio, and if there will ever be a time when I don’t have to hide or fear the sound of dogs barking.

Because of this, he hides during the day and runs during the night. He did that for so many days he lost count.
I can't even think about doing that for one day so i think that that would be a horrible experience to endure.

Walter is considered a "fugitive", this means that it is illegal for him to be in Ohio. People can be punished for ever helping him.
In fact, this statement is so true that John (a man against slavery) had to make Walter sleep in another part of the house to not get caught. I personally can't believe that there were this kind of law and I also don't understand why you would punish a human for helping other humans. That entire concept makes no sense to me and I am very glad that that is not the case today.
