He was sold to a plantation in Kentucky when he was a todler. His mom was crying, begging the master to not go. It was too late, the horses left. The poor child was stuck on the back of a wagon. They told him to travel through Cleveland, from where he could cross Lake Erie into Canada. The wife packed Walter food for his journey.
That night John gives me a rough map of places I can stay, and tells me I should travel through Cleveland. From there, he says, I can cross Lake Erie into Canada. One of the main reasons was the fact that there was no slavery. Apparently the dog is suppose to use his strong sense of smell to detect the missing slaves. Because of this, he hides during the day and runs during the night. He did that for so many days he lost count.

People can be punished for ever helping him. 
In fact, this statement is so true that John (a man against slavery) had to make Walter sleep in another part of the house to not get caught. I personally can't believe that there were this kind of law and I also don't understand why you would punish a human for helping other humans.
