MEET THE DIRECTOR     Bruce Neibaur

Bruce Neibaur is thrilled to be at American Leadership Academy. He grew up and in Pleasant Grove, Utah and graduated from Snow College with a degree in trumpet performance, commercial music, and music education.  He has taught band at Lyman High School and Intermediate School where while there, both concert band and jazz band received superior ratings at festival. He loves to play his trumpet and share his talent with the world. He plays often at funerals and memorials, with the Utah Premiere Brass, and other community and professional groups. 

1. CONCERT CHOIR is an audition mixed choir of singers. The choir focuses on the development

of vocal and musical skills by the study of vocal technique, music theory, and music appreciation

while aligning with the standards of the Utah State Core Curriculum.

2. TYROS is a beginning mixed show choir class that combines choral singing with choreographed

dance for elementary students grades 5-6. This class includes outside of school time and provides

them the opportunity to perform several times during the school year.

3. INPULSE is the intermediate mixed show choir class that combines choral singing with

choreographed dance for Junior High students. This is an audition group that requires outside of

school time and provides them the opportunity to compete and perform during the school year.

4. EVOLUTION is our advanced mixed show choir that is an audition group and competes at the

highest level, with specially designed sets, choreography and in-depth vocal nuances that create

amazing performances. This is a competitive show choir, representing ALA throughout the

nation during competition season and requires students to be dedicated and willing to practice

outside of school hours. (Grades 9-12).

5. ENCORE is our top audition a cappella group. This ensemble of mixed voices is comprised of 15

singers, in balanced parts, that are hard-working and dedicated with exceptional music skills.

Encore will select, compose, and arrange a portion of their repertoire. This choir performs the

most often and records music videos. (Grades 9-12).

6. CHOIR TECH is a class that provides technical assistance for the show choirs in all concerts and

on tour. Students will work on costuming, set-design, lights, riser set-up and tear-down, etc. This

is a very essential class that adds to the overall success of our choir program. This class requires

after school and out of school time. (Grades 9-12).

1. BALLROOM COMPANY is an intermediate to advanced competition class which builds dance knowledge and skill in technique, improvisation, choreography, and artistic expression.  This is an audition class that includes competitions and practice outside of school hours.  (Grades 9-12)

2. JH HIP HOP COMPANY is an intermediate dance course which builds dance knowledge and skill in technique, improvisation, choreography, artistic expression, performance, and urban dance styles.  This is an audition class that requires extra rehearsals before and after school.

3. HIP HOP COMPANY is an intermediate to advanced competition company level dance course which builds dance knowledge and skill in technique, improvisation, choreography, artistic expression, performance, and urban dance styles.  This is an audition class that requires rehearsals before and after school.

4. SURGE is our auditioned advanced competition company.  This group is a mix of ballroom and hip hop and comprised of upperclassmen who have been in ballroom and hip hop companies.  This is a group of dancers that choreograph and compete and perform during the school year.

MEET THE DIRECTOR:  Rick Robinson

Rick started his formal dance training at the age of 18 and his love and passion for the performing arts pushed him to having training in modern dance, jazz, ballet, tap, hip hop, and ballroom.  Rick believes that dance is putting life to movement and then allowing your audience to decide what they will.  Ricks lists of credits include performing with Donnie and Marie Osmond, Gladys Knight, Jeffrey Osborne, Kenny Loggins, Boys II Men, Odyssey Dance Theatre, the movie Dance with Me, cameo appearance on Dancing with the Stars and working with Graham Rossell of Air Supply on the world premiere of Petalbump. Rick has traveled to 40+ countries performing for the highest of dignitaries and ambassadors.  Rick’s students continue to dominate in the world of dance as many have moved on to be affiliated with Dancing with the Stars, So You Think You Can Dance, Paula Abdul’s Live to Dance and have toured with many greats like Michael Jackson, Cher, and many others.

1. JUNIOR HIGH DANCE COMPANY is an audition dance course which builds knowledge and skill in technique, improvisation, choreography, and artistic expression.  This group has the opportunity to perform during the school year. (Grades 7-8)

2. DANCE COMPANY is a company level dance course which builds dance knowledge and skill in technique, improvisation, choreography, and artistic expression.  This is an audition group that has the opportunity to perform and compete several times during the school year.  Requires extra rehearsals before and after school.

MEET THE DIRECTOR:  Kellie Messerly

Kellie’s passion for dance began when she was 3 years old.  Growing up, she trained competitively in Jazz, Hip-Hop, Ballet, and Tap. She was a member of the Alta High Drill Team for 3 years where she was the Drill Mistress of her state winning team. While in high school, Kellie won the title of Miss Dance/Drill Team Utah. Kellie was then invited to Nagoya, Japan where she won the title of Miss Dance/Drill Team International and won top honors with the Minister of Foreign Affairs Award. Kellie then continued her education at the University of Utah where she was the head cheerleader.  Kellie danced professionally with Odyssey Dance Utah for seven years. She was the director of Dance Utah Summer Camp. Kellie had the opportunity to direct Odyssey’s Junior Company, O2, for two years. Kellie’s real passion is teaching and choreographing. She has been teaching for over 25 years. She was nominated for the Who’s Who among America’s Top Teachers. Kellie has choreographed the musicals Peter Pan, Footloose, Rag Time and Wizard of Oz at the Scera Shell Outdoor Theatre. Kellie’s students have won many National titles, have been seen dancing on So You Think You Can Dance, Dancing with the Stars, Broadway Stages in New York, at Julliard, on tour with pop stars, and dancing internationally.  Kellie was a co-founder of The Vibe Performing Arts. In 2011 the Vibe was finalists on Paula Abduls dance show “Live to Dance”. She has choreographed and directed shows with the Vibe including, Move, One Night Only, and Evolutions of Dance. 

1. DRAMA IV s a course for those students who want an intense performance-based, college-prep experience with theatre. Students will participate in all school plays and competitions.  This is an audition group and requires extra rehearsals after school.

2. IMPROV THEATRE is a course that uses improvisation games and exercises that will help students improve their performance skills and learn to think on their feet. Students will have the opportunity to perform several times throughout the year.

MEET THE DIRECTOR:   Sandy Millet

Sandra Millet has taught Theatre, French and Film at ALA since 2006.  She has been passionate about theatre ever since she can remember, but her first experience on a professional stage was at 12 years old with the Utah Shakespeare Festival. She believes that theatre has the power to build confidence, teach interpersonal and language skills, and inspire empathy.  Sandra attended Brigham Young University, earning a dual Bachelor’s degree in English and Theatre and a Master’s degree in Theatre History, Theory and Criticism. She has helped to create two theatre companies-- Salem Community Theatre and Halfpenny Youth Theatre and loves to direct and write plays.  Some of her favorite directing experiences include The Three Musketeers, The 39 Steps, Peter and the Starcatcher and Richard III. Her students have won awards and scholarships for both acting and playwriting, and many have gone on to perform in live theatre, opera, television and film.  

Musical Dance Theatre involves the development of three skills: singing, dancing and acting all simultaneously.  This class will strive to improve these skills through class practice, performance and outside of class performance.  These skills will be further enhanced by learning difficult vocal styles, dance styles, partnering both vocals and dance, collaboration and the art of storytelling through the powerful medium of musical theatre.

MEET THE DIRECTOR     LARRY BLACKBURN

Larry Blackburn teaches piano, theater tech, AP music theory and MDT, music theater classes, and has been the organist at First Presbyterian Church in Salt Lake City for 20 years. Larry has a Bachelor's degree from the University of California at Santa Barbara, and a Masters degree in organ performance from Brigham Young University. He has performed with the Utah Symphony and concertized regularly on the historic Tabernacle and Conference Center organs on Temple Square as a Guest Organist for 25 years. Mr. Blackburn served as a staff accompanist at BYU, performed and taught at the annual BYU Organ Workshop for many years and was adjunct professor in the Theater and Film department at Utah Valley University for three years.

Mr. Blackburn is highly sought after as a professional accompanist. He frequently is asked to be the rehearsal accompanist for the Utah Symphony Chorus, served many years as the accompanist for the 150 voice Wasatch Chorale in Utah Valley, an accompanist for the Institute for Young Dramatic Voices under the direction of Metropolitan Opera star Dolora Zajick, and he is a recording studio pianist/accompanist.

Before moving to Utah Blackburn lived in Minnesota and Santa Barbara California. He comes to Utah after serving the Minnesota Bach Society and two large Episcopal parishes in St. Paul, Minnesota and Santa Barbara, California where he also taught piano at Westmont College. Larry has performed in Canada, England, Poland, Estonia, and Russia, and he can be seen on International TV as far away as China, Russia and South America.
