Students are failing because teachers are failing to build relationships with them. A student will not learn from someone they do not like or feels that the teacher does not like them.

My school tests so much that my students don't think anything else is important unless it's a standardized test. I think the students are disengaged because of the constant "need" to be on their cellphones and talking to one another.

Growing up poor, they leave school with a general focus on “making money” instead of trying to excel at a career.
