you could use distinctive sound effects to establish the setting of the event (cars passing by, glass breaking, etc). in fact, a lack of sound could also imply some part of the setting in itself distinctive characters and their feelings can also be established via their subconscious mannerisms like sighing, or coughing. certain kinds of background music can also be used to establish tone and mood (classical music could be more serious, a light-hearted jingle).

- background sounds can tell you a lot about the person's physical environment/their actions (farm animal noises for a farm setting, chattering children for a school setting)
- sounds can also hint at action? like, footsteps, a slap noise...etc
- connecting events can be done with sfx as well. certain sounds have very specific connotations so that could be used to drive the narrative along (eg someone got hurt --> ambulance noise)

1. Background music can contribute a lot. Additionally, certain sounds that are tied to the character can do a good job to establish who’s who. For example. If a character walks with a heavier gait, their footsteps will sound more cumbersome and heavy and loud, while a character who is more poised and gentle may have a softer footstep.
2. The ambient noise in the background can help a lot too. If you have established a scene in the past to be occurring in the rain, the background ambient sound of a rainstorm can immediately switch the timeline without being too explicit.
