(1839-1906) Through Cezanne’s work he relates to the impressionist movement through his use of colour and form this understanding was first established through his time he spent working with Camille Pissarro the so-called father of impressionism Camille Pissarro. Through Pissarro’s stewardship Cezanne lightened up his palette using a impressionistic paint such as viridian, French ultramarine blue and red lake. The two artists would go on plein air sketches together painting the same motifs which was a departure from Cezanne’s earlier work which was darker images which took inspiration from romanticism which was a much more traditional way of creating painting. This led Cézanne to create his most recognisable work. Cezanne differs from the impressionist movement as he wants to create an everlasting depiction of an image which contrasts the impressionist ideology which wants to create there first vizierial impression of a place. Through Cézanne’s art he tries to create a unification of an image and a balance which creates a sense of place and time. This is something I want to show in my work. Cézanne creates a unification of forms which often illustrates forms of shape which led to the start of the cubist movement. This shows Cezanne’s importance to modern art as cubist art is vital to the understudying’s of contemporary art movements today. This abstraction of shape was inspired through the appliance of camara obscure which helped Cézanne create images with a distorted use of perspective. The painting “mount Sainte-victourie” shows Cezanne’s trademark use of geomatic abstraction of paint which he often painted. The image shows Cezanne’s great understanding of perspective which he expertly illustrates through his evaluation of tonal qualities creating great depth. The image shows the formulaic appliance of paint as Cezanne’s paintings as he adds repetitive rectangular strokes which are shown in foreground. This repetitiveness is also seen through the application of colour where the use of green is used in the midground and the background this makes the bounce around the canvas creating a more aesthetically pleasing image to the eye. Cézanne also shows an interesting image to the viewer as he uses a strong composition through the horizon on the painting and the use of the mountain which creates a balance. Cézanne also creates different perspectives in his images this can be seen as Cezanne’s images from a distance shows a form that relates that reflects reality but Cézanne pulls you into the picture and as you do so you see his distortion of abstract form.

The painter who revealed how our eyes really see the world - BBC Culture

Paul cezane by tashen

Paul Winstanley

Paul Winstanley is a modern artist who was born in Manchester in 1954 who creates works which show vast spaces of tone with a close observation of form and colour which creates a stillness. One of the ways that Winstanley was inspired is through the abstract modernism art movement which shows understandings of the abstraction of shapes and forms can be adapted to create a conceptual meaning. This can be shown in Winstanley’s work as his art is open to interpretation creating a contemporary quality which is in contrast to less contemporary artwork which has a distinctive narrative which can be shown through a portrait or a image which represents religious events. Although Winstanley shows the idea of isolation the interoperation of these ideas can be interpreted in different ways. One of the ways in which this can be shown is through the art critic Paul Carey Kent where he sees the passing of time through the images. The similarities between abstract modernism and Winstanley’s work can be shown through his abstraction of form which Winstanley often illustrates through his abstraction of formal shapes which are illustrated in his photos and oil paintings. This oil painting above “veiled lobby” depict a space where no person is there creating a loneliness to this painting. I get an emotional response to this image and makes me think of the meaning behind Winstanley’s work. As an artist I also want to touch people in a deep way. This emotional response I feel is further suggested through his tonal colour palette which does a good job a presenting this mondain spaces. Winstanley creates a great sense of place which we as the viewer can pear into the image. It’s clear from Winstanley’s work that he’s inspired by the old masters through he’s observations of tone and form which a true to life quality to his work. His understanding of art can be shown through his use of composition as he shows depth through the appliance of the background, midground and foreground which helps to create depth in the image this is also shown through the compositional lines which are shown through the use of the golden ratio and the planes of glass which help give the image structure. The importance of composition helps create an image that bit more appealing to the viewer. This isolation Winstanley illustrates in his work can similarly be shown with Edward Hooper who also shows the importance of tonal understanding. Although Winstanley is a contemporary artist his work also shows a stillness of form which can relate to renaissance art.

Artists Writing: Paul Winstanley - FAD Magazine

About (paulwinstanley.com)

I have been listening a lot to The kinks are the village green perseveration society which its most primary subject represents the Americanisation of British society in the 60s and the drawbacks which will happen in the coming decades due to globalisation. The album celebrates British culture through representing culture tropes which creates a romanticised view of British culture. This inspired my idea to create work which represents a different view of the world which goes against dull modern culture. These ideas were shown in my work at the first half of the year.

Caravaggio was an Italian painter (1571-1610). Whose paintings create a dramatic depiction of mostly religious images. Caravaggio created art which created reality in such a accurate way. Caravaggio was able to produce this through his use of complex compositions which creates a dramatic image as well as an aesthetically pleasing image to the viewer creating a presentence to his images. Another way in which Caravaggio creates reality is through his use of dramatic light called chiaroscuro which is an Italian word when translated into English means black to white. Chiaroscuro allows Caravaggio to create a three dimensionality and a roundness of form through the use of tonality. Although Caravaggio is seen to be a baroque artist, he’s paintings are differentiated from other artists of the art movement through his use of more naturalistic paintings which represents a humanisation of biblical stories which was achieved by basing his paintings from sitting models. Caravaggio also helps represent a realistic use of form through careful use of tone in the background creating depth as well as the naturalistic use of objects which is in contrast to other painters of the baroque such as Peter Paul Rubens which represents a composition using a bold representation of colour. Caravaggio was not only known for his paintings but by his personality as he was known to being in trouble as he had been brought to trail on 11 occasions including killing a man other a disagreement over tennis. Caravaggio first learned his artistic trade by Simone Peterzano who was pupil of Titian. Through learning the teachings of Titan, Caravaggio was able to start to understand the ways he can construct an oil painting through the understanding of layering paint and adding tone to create three dimensionality. Although there were great advocates for Caravaggio’s dramatic, intense artwork was also seen to be controversial which was shown after his death when Nichols poussin an artist said “He came close to destroying art” because of the blurred lines which Caravaggio illustrated between heaven and earth. Through the years after he was forgotten about until the 20th century when curators took note of the talent of Caravaggio which has helped his art inspire modern culture. This can be shown through Martin Scorsese appreciation of Caravaggio’s work through the directness of his scenes which can be predominantly shown through the bar scene in mean streets.

Carravagio tashen by Giles Lambert

https://www.bbc.com/culture/article/20161010-why-caravaggio-was-a-shocking-as-his-paintings

The main reason an artist works with a gallery is to exhibit their work to potential buyers. Through the representation of a gallery an artist can also gain respect from a potential buyer due to the high regard being placed on the gallery. Another benefit is that with the gallery the viewer can best see the beauty of the art. Through working with a gallery there is lots of opportunities for networking which can create more opportunities in the art world although there are benefits from using gallery representation there can be downsides such as the gallery taking a commission from a sold artwork but the artist may have found it hard to sell the painting otherwise.

I see the ways that art is sold historically as outdated. Although historically the gallery is seen as being important through the advent of social media it has created more control to the artist. Social media can be used as content stream to a larger amount of people creating a more immediate way of showing a artist’s work and selling artwork which reflects the fast paced modern world which we live in.

I have created my own content stream which keeps up to date with paintings through posts and use of stories. This will help the exposure of my work. I can also gain expose through the understanding of hashtags and the timing of posts

https://agifineart.com/advice/benefits-of-gallery-representation/

Through his practices Asbestos looks most prominently through themes of pop art and the work of Warhol and the ways in which this infiltrated mainstream culture .Through his earlier work he created more traditional paintings but felt that he was not able to create a cohesive body of work. In 2018 he was able to create work best suited to him through using a wide array of media through his fashion runways, sculpture pieces or videogames. Through his new art he creates a populist attraction through his art use of bright bold colours and pop culture themes. Although I don't enjoy Asbestos's work as I don't connect in a meaningful way, I find Asbestos purpose of trying to connect to mainstream culture dilutes the quality and authenticity of his work. I was interested though through the ways that asbestos marketed them self and the ways in which Asbestos can profit from their work which helped me think about my professional studies into website design

Gwen John was a Welsh artist who was born in 1876 and died in 1939 who would often create art in isolation and was not appreciated in her lifetime. Johns first introduction into the art world was at slade which had an academical tradition which started with drawing and would lead to copying the old masters which helped her understanding of paintings immensely. Although the artist was born in Wales she moved to France in her late 20s, but kept a traditional way of applying tonal qualities which resonates closely to English painting in contrast to French art. John gained inspiration by James Whistler in her earlier years which relates closely to her academical practises at the slade .“Girl with a cat” shows Johns subtle use of tonal variation which creates a atmospheric quality which is also shown through the appliance of paint shown on the canvas. This atmospheric quality makes me feel a spiritual quality to her work. A cohesiveness has been achieved through the limited application of brush strokes which also describes the dimensionality of human form, this is very hard to achieve. Gwen John also illustrates her understanding of the importance of colour which is shown through her subtle use of colour which can be seen in the background of the painting as the contrasting colour of red and green can be seen. The use of red in the background can also be contrasted through the foreground of the girl through the green of her sleaves. This allows john to show a extra layer of depth. Johns understanding of colour can further be shown through the blue of her dress is contrasted with the yellow glow of her face. This can also be shown through the whole image which helps to show why the image has an atmospheric quality. Gwen John also shows a great understanding of composition through the central placement of the eye 7/8s on the canvas. The central use of compositional lines can also be shown through shoulders of the girl. This immense understanding of colour and form helps to create the viewer feel absorbed in the painting. This is something I try to show this in my paintings.

Gwen John by Cecily Langdale

Van Gogh was a Dutch artist who was born in 1853 in holland and is known for his use of movement and luminosity of colour which creates a vibrancy which is achieved through the impasto of bight vibrant paint this deeply inspires my own work. Van Gogh’s work has a distinctive linear mark making which creates a looseness which also shows a understanding of form which is shown in the painting above “La Mousme” which is shown through the harshness of the background through the wall to the smoother layers of the dress and shadow. One of Van Gogh’s inspirations can be seen in this painting through Japanese prints this can be seen in van Gogh’s work through the simplification of form and use of Japanese perspective which helps to create a vastness of space. Van Gogh’s love of Japonisme can be shown in a letter he sent to his brother, Theo saying “My studio’s quite tolerable, mainly because I’ve pinned a set of Japanese prints on the walls that I find very diverting. You know, those little female figures in gardens or on the shore, horsemen, flowers, gnarled thorn branches”. Although Van Gogh is a post-impressionist, he gains great inspiration from post impressionists through the use of bright, bold colours. Van Gogh’s inspiration of colour can also be shown through the impressionistic idea of creating a impression of a moment instead of a more true to life depiction of reality like the old masters. This can be shown through Van Gogh’s use of loose bold brush strokes which he sees to create distinctive patterns creating great movement within the picture but also through his use of impasto helps to create a freshness of paint due the masses of paint applied helps create strength to the paint stopping it from being damaged. Van Gogh’s understanding of colour is shown through his use of colour which creates vividness through his understanding of contrasting and complementing colours which can be seen through la mousme’s dotted dress which has the contrast of blue and orange and also relates to Japonisme prints through the use of patterns. This can also be shown through the contrast of red on la mousme’s dress which contrast the emerald green of the background which helps to create the image more appealing to the viewer. Van Gogh’s art shows a simplification of form which relates to a modern audience as the viewer knows how the art is achieved which helps us understand to why Van Gogh relates to wider society not only relate to the art lover.

Fran Hals (1582-1666) was a Dutch baroque artist who represents true to life images this is through Hal's expert understanding of form and tone which also blends the looseness of brush strokes which is reminiscent of impressionism making Frans Hals ahead of his time. Fran Hals lived through the Dutch golden age where the Dutch republic went through a period of having a flourishing economy helping to create great strides in trade, science and art. This helped create great Dutch masters in this period as well as Frans Hals there was Vermeer and Rembrandt etc. Hals was a part of the Dutch golden age and used a similar understanding most predominately the use of subtle earth tones which helps to create great depth and roundness of form which creates great dimensionality of form which was helped through his understandings of Caravaggio and the renaissance. Hals contrasts his contemporaries through the looseness of marks where the latter used more concise tight marks with more of reliance on glazing. These understandings are show in Hal’s painting Portrait of Nicolaes Pietersz Duyst van Voorhout made between 1636-38. This painting shows a great understanding of form this is through Hals abstraction of form which still leaves a volume and depth of form. This creates a movement which is shown throughout the image. The movement which is shown in the image can also be created through the linear mark making which shows great understanding of form through the appliance of brush strokes which realistically resembles form which can be shown through the roughness of the face to the subtle use of strokes of the hair which helps to create a presentence to the painting. The use of linear strokes makes the eye bounce around the image which is most reminiscent of the strokes of van Gogh. Hals also creates a compositional understanding which can be shown as the eye is centrally placed ¾ on the image, a golden ratio is shown through the right side of the face and the face is placed on ½ to 3/4. These compositional understandings is also subtly shown which creates a aesthetically pleasing image. Hals uses a limited use of colour which uses a great use of black which is subtly used to create great depth. Hals simple palette is also shown in this painting as Hals uses the simplistic use of the contrast of green and red to create affect which creates great harmony through the image.

Fran Hals : style and substance by Walter Lieedtke

Joaquin Sorella is a Spanish artist who was born in 1863 and 1923 which paintings have been inspired through impressionism through Sorella use of bright loose brushstrokes. Sorella was inspired when visiting painters such as Edward manet and John Singer Sargent. Sorolla home city of a Valencia in the south coast of Spain has a bold intense use of light which Sorella expertly capturers through his famous use of light. This is shown through Sorolla’s (Verano) 1904 (shown above). which painting doesn’t just show impressionistic qualities but a understanding of representable form which closely shows a understanding of form which relates to the old masters, more closely to Spanish masters such as a Diego Velazquez and Francesco Goya through the placement of marks and the use of tone which creates an atmospheric quality. Sorella shows great interest in Velazquez this can be shown through copying at least 15 painting of the old master. Soreallas love for Velazquez can be shown through his painting The errazuris family which references Velazquez les mineas which shows a similar use of composition which shows great depth. Sorella differs from his contemparys through the use of colour where he shows radiant colour in contrast to the old masters through the importance placed on tonal pieces. The Verano shows a great understanding of composition which is shown through the use of the golden ratio of the girl shown in the foreground which creates a appalling painting to the viewer. Another way in which Sorella does this is through the use of different places through the foreground midground and background which helps to create depth another way in which this is achieved is through the wave which flows through the centre of the painting at a 45 degree which helps to show further space. The angle of the wave also helps creates a balance. Sorella shows a expert understanding of balance which is shown through the use of colour which is predominately shown through the contrast of yellow and blue which is then complimented through the contrast of yellow and violet. Sorolla also shows hints of red which is subtly contrasted with the use of green tones in shadows. I really enjoy Sorella’s use of freedom and looseness of strokes and the ways in which he is able to articulate form whilst having a freedom of mark making this is something I would like to achieve in my work.

Sorolla spanish master of light by the national gallery

Camille Pissarro (1830-1903) was known for his importance in the impressionist movement this can be seen through Pissarro working closely with artists who embraced the impressionist movement such as Cézanne , degas and Monet. These artists mentioned took part in the “impressionist” exhibitions which took place in the 1870s and 1880s which help to give routinity to the art movement. The movement went against the contemporary art of the time which was represented by the French Academy of fine arts which showed a Adamical way of creating form which showed a true to life quality. This allows us to understand that the art critics at the time did not like impressionism at the start of the movement due to the vast contrast to contemporary practices. Pissarro was one of the artists that show a use of bright colour and an understanding of spontaneity of the feeling of a place. This creates a self-expression which relates to contemporary art movements. This is in contrast to art movements before impressionism which showed art which referred to a true to life painting style. A way in which the impressionists was able to achieve the great sense of expression is through painting on plien air which help to create a spontaneity of a image and the blurred the lines of a study and a final painting. The technology of the time helped the impressionists through the advent of paint tubes. Paint tubes allowed the artist to be able to create paintings in a more accessible way because all the painter needed to do is to squeeze paint from the tube. This made it a lot easier for the artist to carry paint when plein air painting. This is in contrast to previous ways for the artist to paint where they would need to be by pigment and make paint themselves. The painting "A corner of the meadow at ergnay" shows the themes that the impressionist movement through the looseness of brushstrokes which helps to create a sense of place. I like Pissarro’s use of controlled colour where he creates great sense of depth and dimensionality through the use of the expert use of tone which has been used using modern paint mixing using French ultramarine blue and rose madder which enables Pissarro to create tone. This combination of French ultramarine and rose madder is shown throughout the painting which helps to create a unification of his paintings. This is something I would like to achieve in my paintings.

book is (pissaro the father of impresonism)

What is Impressionism, History of Impressionism and Impressionists, start of impressionism movement.

The Artist Stan Prokopenko uses his website to advertise he’s courses for drawing. He sells his courses through bundles which has multiple lessons for a specific genre such as portrait drawing fundamentals or comic book drawing. Proko allows the consumer to understand the content of the lessons by giving free lessons. This makes the consumer believe in the product as Proko wouldn't give away free lessons if he didn't believe in the product. Proko also shows understanding of connecting to their consumer which can be shown through the community page which showcases the quality of art which is shown by the practitioners of the lessons. I would like to create a close connection to my consumer as I fell this would help the business.

I feel through learning website design it has helped me understand the ways in which a artist can make money through art and the content streams which can be achived and learnt that its not as simplistic as just selling paintings. I feel that I have also learnt the subtle nuances of web design as little details on a page can make that bit more appealing to the consumer. Although I feel my website is quite simplistic in design, it works quite well practically and gives me the ground to add to the website by not only design preferences but through other content streams in the future.
