There is a large reservoir of nitrogen in the air, but in a chemical form that is unavailable to plants. Therefore, it needs to be "fixed" into usable form as nitrates or nitrites by soil microorganisms. If there is excess nitrogen can cause over stimulation of growth of aquatic plants and algae. Excessive growth of these organisms, in turn, can clog water intakes, use up dissolved oxygen as they decompose, and block light to deeper waters.
