Project Week

In my previous school, Grade 11 students had to organize and complete a project week. They had to find a local group to partner with and come up with a way to support that group for a week. It usually involved things like partnering with an NGO. This required planning and a sustained effort. Most students travelled outside of school for the week but stayed within the country. There was a lot of variety in the projects from helping out at a veterinary clinic attached to an animal shelter, protecting baby sea turtles, working with local schools to educate about menstrual health and producing or providing reusable products to working with a group that grows seedling trees for reforestation. They often worked in small teams so they weren't travelling or working alone. Some stayed on campus and did indirect service - for example, one group paired with an NGO that wanted a PSA made but couldn't afford a film company, so the students wrote, acted, and filmed a short film highlighting their cause.

Old folks home

Students could set up time (once a months?) and go and play board games with the people there. This could be also part of PSHE. They could even design their own board games in art/design and bring those over.

Supporting students in need

Our students could set up a collaboration with an orphanage near by to facilitate math/computer science (or even English) lessons once every two weeks or so. Perhaps it could even be online.

After school clubs for Service

The grade 11/12 students could be invloved with Service by organizing a Service Club where they educate/share ideas/resources and organize activities with and for younger students.

Additionally the clubs that the teachers were supervising after school mostly had to be service clubs.

Running Service Activities

Students who run any service project in grade 11 could be expected to "pass on" the information to the new grade 11s a year later. In that way, there is continuity and becomes students' responsibility to meet with the new leaders of the activity.

Language Acquisition

One idea would be to combine a language immersion school trip with service-learning activities. Students could study the needs of a community beforehand, get in touch with local organizations/NGOs to assess their needs, and possibly participate actively in on-site projects. Alternatively, they could organize workshops (language-related or others).

At my former school, they organized a school trip for DP students for many years. This allowed students to dedicate a full week to service-learning activities as part of a long-term project (building toilets in a village, painting a kindergarten in a rural area, etc.). Ideally, I would like to bring back this concept, combining it with a language immersion trip or something similar.

Students can record video and audio for different topics.

Since we already have the foundation EmpowerEd up and running, we could use help of students to help create content for Instagram, create videos, interviews, podcasts on how we are reaching out to community and support other NGOs. They could also organize fundraising events, silent auctions, rollerblade "race" to raise support for various causes, for example.
