Those were important steps in the direction of making historic preservation accessible to the public, and creating narratives to go along with the preservation efforts.

Most towns and cities that you visit have brochures or walking tour guides with interesting facts and important locations. But can they be used as historic artifacts? And what can they tell us about the creation or promotion of a town's identity?

We can look at Jonesborough's own walking tour guides to answer those questions. The brochure here is undated, but you can use clues to approximate the publication date. For example, the Jonesborough officially added the "ugh" back to Jonesboro in 1983, but the spelling here is still "Jonesboro." The Christopher Taylor House was relocated to Main Street in 1974, but it is absent from the map and the structure list. Therefore, this is likely one of the earlier Civic Trust walking tour guides, probably no later than 1974. The brochure describes Jonesborough's past, but it also captures a snapshot of Jonesborough at the time that it was published.
