Social issues or politics might not seem connected to architecture in any way, but they do shape the way it evolves in a certain part of the world at a certain time of the year. An engineer can perhaps afford to ignore what is happening politically in the area he's building in (structural principles do not vary) but not an architect. What this taught me about the role of the architect is that s/he has to be mindful of the possible use of architected space.
