When looking at it from a larger sense, statistics is the study of the collection, analysis, interpretation, presentation, and organization of data. But what does that end up meaning in ‘real life’ and how we can actually use it? When thinking about the field of education and how statistics would apply to in that setting; education often has a number of challenges in terms of policy planning and procedures, and statistics are important as they often provide some of the only objective information that administrators use when making larger organizational and curricular decisions. Without actual hard data in place, often nothing separates the merits of the various arguments that people on different sides of policy decisions make supporting their own cases. So statistics do play a key role in education and bring a definite value to the table when trying to make key decisions.

I believe statistics are used in education because they are easily understandable.

The use of statistics in educational research can be a double-edged sword. Accurate qualitative research relies on proper framing of questions to avoid preconceived biases. When collected and applied properly, statistical data can be very useful in overturning preconceived notions and anecdotal conclusions. Statistics allow us to take a much broader and truthful view of a situation. However, they can also be used in education, when misinterpreted, to promote questionable practices that are political or ideological in nature.
