A single note is exactly as it seems. It is a single note that, when played repeatedly, gives the song a deeper meaning. I agree with Ben Ratliff's analysis of a single note and can see how a single note can represent something bigger. Ratliff uses the example of "I Wanna Be Sedated" by the Ramones. It is a song that I recognized the guitar solo in before it was pointed out by him. The single note guitar solo is used as, to quote Ratliff, "a pretty good imitation of the states of nonthinking and nonfeeling". "Roslyn" by Bon Iver & St. Vincent is also a great single note song. "Roslyn" is a song about a girl committing suicide. The single note replayed in the song makes for a good representation of life coming to a standstill. It gives the song a beautifully haunting quality that leaves the audience with the feeling that something has happened, even if you cannot fully understand Bon Iver and St. Vincent as they sing.
