It takes you up the franklin mountians and at the top is a great view and a giftshop. 
The ride itself is about 4-5 minutes. 
If you're afraid of heights, like me, the 4 minutes feel like forever. They built it to aid the construction of a transmitter tower. The tram way opened its doors or gates in 1960 till 1986. They closed in '86 because the cost of liability insursance became to high. It was then only used to service the transmistion towers. Citing the tramway had surpassed its life expectancy and ultimatley closed. 
In May of 2019, the Texas House of Representatives passed a bill allowing $15 Million to be used to fix the tramway. I had never been up there until after my sister had passed and she wanted us to "take her to see it one last time". This was back in 2016 and it was my first and last time up there. Those who had a chance to visit before it closed, know the beauty that is the Wyler Aerial Tramway. It is full of desert wildlife, and the occasional squirel. I hope to visit again if and when it reopens. I also encourge you to visit when it reopens aswell.
