Firstly I started out with the idea of completing my second year digital image module creating a product for the male market of men’s makeup due to this being a successful and enjoyable project. After considering this approach I realized the target market would have been very niche and may not be profitable in my development or in the current climate as the term ‘metrosexual’ hasn’t fully peeked as of yet.

I then began to ponder about thoughts of what aspect within the fashion communication field I could approach and want to pursue as a potential career this involved styling; reasoning behind this is that I have been seen to have a creative eye for trends with previously assisting on photo-shoots during my internship with Matt Ford Studios over the summer of 2013, and although I find this career path interesting and delightful I see it more as a hobby due to me not wanting to turn this field in to a regrettable decision, I also considered Illustration among other career paths.

Finally I read a few books and spoke to my tutor about Trend Forecasting and with me being a bit hesitant about this approach at first I began to find myself in ore of this path. Throughout the first month or so, a lot of inspiration and research had to be considered to define my style of work. I began looking in to the market already aware in this industry such as Viewpoint and WGSN among other trend forecasting companies then approaching a Lost & Found sign and these word being the beginning of my theme. My idea was to look back in to the past, how new trends are rarely seen much these days; pattern, fabrics and shapes are reinvented from kitsch icon eras, one trend at the time being tartan checks a pattern reinvented more times than imaginable, almost like a time capsule. I wanted to make my idea adding sentimental and historic value to define what my theme should be how we are always holding on to the past when it comes down to trends due to nostalgic referencing looking to our parents for advice etc. Trend Forecasting isn’t just based around fashion trends its also an insight to interior design, cultural references, architecture and other things, I have based my theme around objects in hope to fit items together to create a few trend boreds along with analysis of each. Each trend is a part of the theme The Lost & Found Objects Of Everyday Life, this title was developed by research in to vintage products that we wouldn’t normally think about in the present day. Along the past few months I have visited a number of exhibitions, museums and markets to gather information, gain inspiration and collect items to fit with each trend to pinpoint what each trend stands for and having the ability to influence designers. There have been a number of situations I have had to overcome during this module finding out my target market in which is identified in my world markets report of up and coming designers, I have also found it very difficult to find my initial idea in to what I can achieve and enjoy I feel already I have accomplished this. After the first month I decided I felt more confidant in what I was doing and only recently looked up upon WGSN to find they now have some of the same content I have found, such as a vintage section and research in to the artist David Hockney and although this makes me believe I am going in the right direction, it has it could be said the research is plagiarised, however this isn’t the case as my research is all primary with visiting events etc. also the dates of my research is dated before WGSN published this content. So far I have thoroughly enjoyed this project due to it mainly involving primary research and hand rendered aspects when visuals are concerned.

First of all originally I had in mind a result of journal or web content much like companies already aware in the trend forecasting industry such as Viewpoint and WGSN among others. With research from the module world markets being considered by the question ‘Is Technology The Way Forward For Trend Analysis To Reach & Communicate To The Fashion Industry?’ Answer overall for my target market is yes, but also have a side line of opportunity to work more closely with consumers when in need to gather certain information. I realised to gather the content and layout to a professional standard that I originally wanted would go beyond my control and would cost a small fortune, to get an effective layout I wanted would be a module in itself.

I began to think of alternative solutions rather than me potentially competing with current businesses and work towards gaining their attention, and having this information to maybe show them the skills I have developed during this project. I have decided to develop a instillation piece and looking in to artist referencing such as Christian Boltanski, Lisa Milroy, David Hockney, Richard Hamilton with others, I haven’t fully been able to pinpoint my style through these artists as of yet. I have been keeping a close eye on social media sites like pinterest, instagram etc. to gain more inspirations on developing my result.

The plan then was based around the past; my oldest object that I know of is a book named Princes Mary’s Gift Book published in 1914, so I thought what happened in 1914? It marks 100 years to this day in age and the breakout of World War I, this will be the basis of my theme for the art instillation. I plan to have sandbags against rugged material (fence or wall etc.) whilst having four windows in this almost like a house and the use of windows looking in to each trend found within the past 100 years that could be reestablished.  This idea may be lightly to change during development.

During the Final Creative Module I have been able to develop more skills than imaginable, I thought it was risky at first tapping in to a field of the unknown in my most crucial year at university, but in actual fact its been a brilliant pay off. Throughout this project I have enjoyed a number of methods used, in most case my development has been able to identify my own unique style of work. I have overcome obstacles (Many stated in Mid Evaluation), that has gave me dedication to resolve the issues and learn from mistakes all able to produce development including problem solving. The overall process of the project has given confidence in to pursuing trend forecasting as a career as it has given enthusiasm in to a rough year. There have been a number of stages I have enjoyed and with this in mind I have to acknowledge the people in my surroundings helping me through indecisive decision-making.

Introduction

The idea for my Final Creative Project will focus on Trend Forecasting, creating series storyboards for the forthcoming years. The theme will be based around vintage findings, objects from the past to show that trends never truly fade, trends are mainly just re-published every so often; whilst I am gaining a better knowledge of visual communication and understanding the methods used within the trend analysis (i.e. colour, content, layout). All this will be able to produce a final response as time goes by, from structure to content; using this information and ability to discover a final outcome which will be an instillation art piece showcasing my findings throughout this module along with a promotion leaflet of each trend produced.

Aims

· Create a series of trend forecasting visuals, imagery used to inspire designers in to develop a collection by looking in to vintage objects through visiting a number of location consisting of vintage stores, charity shops, markets and car boot sale. I will also be including sentimental object that give vintage element in design.

· Create a series of visuals complementing past key fashion eras in history.

· Produce a final outcome reflective of trend forecasting with creating a hand rendered instillation art piece and promotional material beside.

·Involve information on trend analysis with titles such as: Theme, Definition, Key Words, Direction and Market.

Methods

· Research into past, present and future trends by dating objects back to an era of style; also taking current environment, economic state and surroundings in to consideration.

· Research in to the market although a market already aware of, but is there a gap for market for more trend forecasting?

· Use this research to develop unique imagery and writing style to fit the market whilst having a strong knowledge of trends and current affairs.

· Finding a niche to make my overall idea different and new with finding through research a unique selling point.

· Visit exhibitions and events for possible inspiration and primary research with involving lifestyle influences.

· Look in to keywords influencing my research and define what the meaning of the word is.

Personal Statement

To create a range of trend predictions for the lifestyle industry based around vintage findings, my aim is to establish that new trends are rarely seen in this day in age; trend analysis is mainly reinvented from past iconic fashionable and kitsch decades. Ideas for final outcome consist of four instillation art pieces along with promotional material with explanation of trend analysis. This Final Creative Project should enable me to be decisive on career set, it will inform me of what is needed in the trend forecasting field along with having various skillset.
