He created a narrative with 3 parts around the walls of the Scrovegni Chapel. The paintings are read from the middle of the chapel from the top right to bottom left clockwise. The strip includes the Virgin’s early life (scenes 1-12), Christ’s early life (scenes 17-27), and lastly the story of Joachim and Anna. Giotto’s goal was huge; he basically wanted to explain the whole Christian story in strips and scenes. The whole process was very difficult to design and create the whole strip. He made sure that each scene was able to flow through each other but also were full themselves. Each character, especially the angels have such detailed faces, hands, postures, etc. “The Last Judgment” was a huge fresco in the middle of the surrounding walls with the strip. In The Last Judgment, Christ is sitting with Apostles surrounding him, as he judges the saved and damned. On the left side of Christ, there are angels opening the gates to Heaven. On the right side Christ, there is Hell with terrible creatures. There are many people in the painting and they are all placed by the hierarchy of Creation. Giotto put himself and Enrico Scrovegni (the donor of the chapel) on the left side of the fresco with the group of blessed. He did this because everyone was expected to find where they were in the universe, and he and Enrico believed they belonged there. The Scrovegni Chapel is an incredible religious work of art. Giotto continued to create frescoes in the Peruzzi Chapel and in the Bardi Chapel. All his art told stories, especially the strips of scenes. The Bardi and Peruzzi families were both banking families that both bought chapels. Both chapels are very narrow and tall.
