31st president. Watched businesses collapse and Americans sink
into poverty, as most of his relief plans had flopped. Vetoed direct relief efforts on the grounds that it would be too much governmental involvement and would cripple the capitalism in America. He believed that the depression should be handled on a local level and that the Federal Government had no place to intervene. Said the depression was beyond his control, came off as apathetic to America’s problems.

18th president. Widespread graft and
corruption during his presidency. Had good intentions. Hi suspension of habeas
corpus in attempts to squash the Klu Klux Klan and his support of the Civil
Rights Act of 1875 had no long lasting changes for African Americans. Involved
in several scandals. Whiskey Ring- Whiskey producers bribed Treasury Department
agents to not collect 70 cents per gallon. Orville E. Babcock, one of the tax
evaders, was put on trial. Grant was accused of protecting Babcock. He fired
and replaced a special prosecutor in order to protect Babcock.

10th president. Born into
aristocracy. Supported South Carolina’s prerogative to secede. Tyler opposed
everything his party stood for, including a national bank. Basically took control over the cabinet. He was stubborn and out of touch with America's problems. The entire Harrison-
appointed cabinet resigned. Tyler had to fight an attempt to impeach him.

promises. While in office, he was occupied by golf, poker, and his mistress. Drank whiskey in the White House which was a violation of the 18th amendment. During this time, his appointees plundered the government in many creative ways. The secretary of interior let oil companies tap into government oil
reserves, including one in Teapot Dome.

15th president. Employed a cabinet of Northerners and Southerners in hopes to settle the issue of slavery- issue only intensified and people viewed him as a Southern sympathizer. Signed the Lecompton Constitution, it allowed Kansas to be a slave state, which angered Northerners. Led to John Brown starting a slave in Virginia. Hostilities between the North and South intensified. Didn't do much to stop the secession.
